The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the State of Johor for the past five years stands at more than 9 percent per annum.  Manufacturing contributes the largest share at 36.27 percent.

Despite the current economic crisis, the State Government of Johor is still projecting a high growth rate of about 7 percent this year and it's charted to grow in the next 10 years within the 8 to 10 percent range.

In the years to come, the tertiary and tourism industry are expected to contribute more to the state's robust economy growth as a large number of commercial and tourist-attracting developments come on-stream.  Of which the most interesting one is the Agarta Universe Mega Theme Park, which is projected to attract 6 million tourist each year into the city.

Poverty rate in Johor Bahru City stands at less than three percent of the city's one million population. Population growth rate in Johor Bahru city is about 4.2 percent per annum, as a result of high birth rate and the big influx of migration from other parts of the country and state.

The state government aimed to make the State of Johor an industrialised or developed state by the year 2005, 15 years earlier than the national vision of 2020.   Under the state's vision, Johor Bahru City will be developed into a convention, medicine, trading, petrochemical manufacturing and shopping destination within the Singapore - Johor - Riau Growth Triangle.
