Language, Culture and Media

As Malaysia has a unique blend of people, cultures and traditions, you can expect to experience many different types of languages, religion and cultural practices. Bahasa Malaysia (Malay language), Mandarin (the China and Taiwan Republic of China's national and official language), Tamil (a type of Indian language) and English are widely spoken and used by the community here.

Magnificent temples, churches and mosques exist almost everywhere in the city, and as well as elsewhere in Malaysia.  The unique blend of people and culture is also evident in foods and local delicacies, the colourful and enchanting costumes, festivals, ceremonies and rituals.  Most festivals are religion-related although some are also culturally derived.  Whatever their origin, these festivals offer the visitors an interesting and enchanting insight into the multi-faceted culture that can be traced back to the history of the state.

The metropolitan area is the only region in Malaysia where one can enjoy TV and radio programmes that are broadcasted not only from Malaysia but also from Singapore and Indonesia.  There are about 11 receivable TV channels here in the metropolitan.  Malaysia and Singapore broadcast 4 channels each while Indonesia broadcasts 3 channels. Additionally, the Malaysian cable TV network -- MegaTV, provides 5 more channels while the Malaysia East Asian Satellite (MEASAT) system provides 35 more channels through it's ASTRO network.  As for the FM radio stations, there are about 27 channels from Singapore and Malaysia. There are also 5 Chinese dailies, 4 English dailies, 3 Malay dailies and 2 Tamil dailies.
