Hi David, how fun to sign your log! As you know, we just got back from our circumnavigation and oh, how we long to be back out there! But it won't be long, we are safely back at the dock, and working diligently to be ready to head to sea by April. Good luck to you, it was SO MUCH FUN to talk to you at the boat yard, and to talk sailing, sailing, sailing.
Cheers from Tigger

Don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a good story. I’m in the process of rehab and would like any information about the original interior and/or specifications. Anyone out there able to help? e-mail me at jameswright@seattle-pi.com  thanks...

The dingy you made looks great. I like how you finished it. I am where you were a while ago. Before I saw your site, I downloaded the plans for the D4 dingy and am making a paperboard ¼ scale model right now trying to see how it goes together. I am looking to eventually build a catamaran, maybe the Tiki 21, or 26 seen here:

http://www.sail4U.be/companies/3services/service.html

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~dkmills/tiki21/tiki.html

Right now, I find being a member of a sailing (rental) club to be pretty convenient, but there are many times when I would like to go sailing that are not condusive to renting-quick spin after work, or sometimes I would like to spent a weekend on a boat which is expensive when renting.

I would encourage everyone to follow their dream, whether that is climbing a mountain or sailing to the South Pacific. We had a lot of fun. (comments) Currently living aboard with wife 9yr old son and 12 yr old daughter. Saved our nickels and dimes, sold the house, car etc.. Had the mother of all garage sales. Left three years ago from Seattle area and went north to Alaska for the spring/summer. Incredible beauty. Then headed down the west coast and stopped in Oregon and CA. Wife convinced me to keep going to Mexico. As soon as we got to Puerto Vallarta she said it would be too hard to go back up the coast and besides she already made all the flags and the next homeschool project was Central America. What an experience! Not enough money to turn rt to the South Pacific so turned left and transitted the Panama Canal. Sailed without our engine to Honduras, Belize (WOW) and Mexico. Made landfall two and a half years later in FL. Currently in Titusville,FL at a nice marina. Wife (and kids) want more. Saving $$ and wife is currently writing cruising articles for 48North and SAIL Magazines. Also a book about homeschooli!ng while cruising. Saving Nickels and dimes agian. Have a one year plan to leave again. Want to circumnavigate but funds don't match dreams. However, found out before that if you want to do it bad enough a way will be found. Family dosen't want larger boat. Ours is simple, strong and proven. Don't know how anyone can feel safe on a large boat. Anyone who is dreaming? It's something few people ever do, but there's nothing else like it. Do it. Do it NOW!

Our first trip was from Portland to Lewiston, second, third, fourth, fifth to the San Juans, Gulf Islands and Princess Louisa. We are going to retire this summer and go back to the San Juans, Gult, Desolution, Puget Sound, and what other destinations we can from July through September. After that we may say the winter but will probably head to the Sacramento Delta and spend the winter before venturing on south. We intend to eventually go through the Panama Canal, cruise the Carribean, go up the Mississippi to the Great Lakes, and see after that. It would take entirely too much time to tell you about these cruises but to say the least they have all been very interesting and know the future will include many more great adventures.

Interior is white particle board ceiling with maghonany bulkheads. She is under going a rebuild. Thanks for the pictures since yours is the first one I have seen. What have you done to outfit here for coastal crusing?? What engine is in yours. I have no engine now but am considerfing adding around a 20 hp. Is that ok or is it too big?

The boat described is actually my father's boat. As for myself I fit into the "I DREAM" category. My folks and my friend Kelly and I recently took a week cruise to the British Virgin Islands (chartered boat), and Kelly made a web page describing the trip. Of particular interest is when I fell overboard and my folks had some trouble getting me back on board... Here's the URL:

You have a nice page and a beautiful boat. My Dad and I take navigation very seriously as well. Even in the BVI we kept a DR and used the GPS. Glad to see we have a kindred soul out there.

Hi Folks
I am new to the net so I have stumbled upon your page by accident. We are now back to our own land locked life but have returned from a seven month cruise. This was a dream of ours as we had limited sailing exprience on sailboats on the Saint John river (N.B.)although both my husband and myself had attended boating courses there is nothing like doing it to realize how little you know.We traveled to FL.and spent six weeks looking at boats. There are alot of unmaintained boats out there. On one day we found three boats that met our needs but after much deliberation we chose the Lippincott which in the long run I think was the right one. I should mention that we bought the boat just for the trip with the intention of selling it at the end of the cruise. With the purchase of the vessel the fun began.WHAT TO TAKE.clothes pack ,cut it in half then repack and cut in half again. FOOD first buy a basic book at least its a starting point, Storing the food gear clothes books radio extra ! gear and still having the boat a float was in itself a journey. We also had our 13 year old daughter with us so having that added responsibility we took care and never took risk that I know we would have taken if it had been the two of us.After provisioning we left the west coast of FL traveled down the coast cut across the middle to hook up with my brother who had bought a 26 ft Pearson the year before He had never sailed , we hooked up in La Belle and left on our dream,Then we travelled over the east coast and travelled down to FT lauderdale to await a window of opportunity to cross. they say there are thousands of boats that wait for a window to cross. Its true but being new to the lifestyle we figured two days was long enough and left. The 12 hour crossing turned into 24 with us losing our engine 10 miles off Grand bahamas.Since this was our first real expierence we cheated we motored sailed .At this point I should let you know we had left between two northers and I now know what square waves look like .The front moved in with 30 knot winds needless to say .We survived took a month to recover in th Lucyan Marina and left for the Abacos on Jan 2., to many tales to tell but I highly recommend that if cruising is your dream DO IT. BEST TIME OF OUR LIVES can not wait to go back We have returned home and are now in the process of selling off houses and consolidating our assets so we can retire in 3years 7mths but whos counting. It was better than we dreamed, scary , happy but most of all we were content . THe most unexpected benefit were the people we met ,Some who have come to visit after we returned home and who we will keep in touch with till we sail again,

PS A friend who came to visit fell in love with the boat and bought it,we sailed it to Annapolis ,left it where a crew returned it in the summer .We now can still sail her in Hubbards Cove N,S. when we visit I hope you enjoyed our story again JUST DO >

Very nice job with the video clip, this was the first homemade video clip that I have come across, and it actually worked on my computer. RealPlayer...tell me what kind of video capture board did you use, and what was the file size before and after encoding? I have RealAudio on my web site, but the thought of video both frightens me and excites me. How did you get voice over on the video with the original audio sound still comming through?
Thanks for visiting my web site earlier,

Dinghy raced in Montreal as a teenager and early 20's. Toronado, Int'l 14 Kirby MkIV and MkV, Jolly Boats, and taught adult sailing for five years. Delivered sailboats on the Eastern seaboard and to the Virgin Islands late 1968 and early 1969. Approx 5,000 miles. Chartered for about 15 years with a growing family as an annual summer vacation. Bought our Islander 30 three years ago. Spend every weekend living aboard for the six months of spring, summer and fall. Have toured the Western end of Lake Erie Several times, and have logged almost 1,500 miles of basically day sailing and club racing. She races quite well to a PHRF handicap of 179. Presently doing major repair and modifications. Enlarging the forepeak, some rewiring, converting quarter berth into cockpit locker and inside hanging locker, dinette to be converted to a post 1982 rendition of a traditional layout with an 'L' shaped settee with a pedastal table, redoing the hull-deck joint, just finished rebedding the lights. After this we hope to have funds left over to send the boat for a refinish of the deck, the hul was completed 3 years ago.
Enjoyed chatting. Here's to fair winds.

We just acquired a 1908 Lawley sloop in need of restoration. (Not a lot considering her age.) We build and restore classic woodies for owners all over New England. Having a boat shipped here for repair is a overall, less expensive as we offer free storage to boats under contract for our services. Currently replacing the keel and stem on a 60's CC and restoring a 1950 Century Sea Maid for sale.

I lost my last boat (30 ft. morgan to storage bills) in new york. That was the first time I put it in storage. I have always lived on the hook and will be shure to do so again. I'm new to cruising auxiliaries, having just completed some training for a bareboat certificate. I have, however, been sailing small boats, for racing purposes, for 30 years now. I find that I'm ready for cruising. My life goal has always been to sell my house and retire to a live aboard sailboat, My comliments to you and M'Lady.

I like your M'Lady, the only water I now sail is on Lake Sam Rayburn. My dad and I used to shrimp in the Gulf out of Port Arthur, the boat was named Letha Irene after my mother. My father is now deceased, but my mother is 84 and still living in Groves, Texas. I believe my most memorable moment was when our shrimp troll got snagged and it created a whirlpool that almost sunk the boat. Clear evidence that I survived, but it was really SCARRY! Anyway even 35 years later I remember the sunrises were beautiful, and the water was something to write home about.

Hi ya Dave! Great page. Kudos and all that rot. You may not know about my new Vessel. She's a 1990 90 foot (that's right NINETY FEET LONG) Cheoy Lee. Seven state rooms, four bathrooms, two highly modified Allison twin turbo charged 450 horse power diesel engines. She cruises at 45 knots to wind and has an ice breaker hull should I ever venture too far north. She carries 500 gallons of diesel fuel and has a cruise range of 8000 nautical miles. While near a port, I tow my 32 foot scarab cigarette boat. She cruises at 110 knots and has a range of 100 nautical miles (but darn she gets there fast!).

(comments) We have been Bareboat charterers for the last 8 years. I try to charter at lest once per year and sometimes twice. The bulk of the sailing has been on Lake Michigan. I have done the Calif. coast once and once in the Napes and south Fla. area. I really enjoy cruising and would do more except for work. One daughter headed for Med school and the other starting her 3rd year in college. I am looking very close at both a sailboat and the docking facility. I am concerned the useage would be low unless I am ble to retire early. So, I will continue to search for "crusing help wanted" messages and charter unless something right happens along. It is hard to beat keeping the stinkpot in the garage and running either the big lake or the rivers and other smaller lakes. But the crusing life is enjoyed when we get the chance. Best Regards

We trailer sail the lakes of West Texas from Del Rio to Austin to Dallas. We cruise the coast from Corpus to Brownsville and up the ICW. With our shallow draft we can tie up to my inlaws dock at Baffin Bay. We love sailing and someday hope to find a new homeport such as Clear Lake and move up to a more suitable cruiser. Until then we are sailing as much as possible! Enjoyed your page, especially your fascination with the Flicka. I am researching a better "weekender" to possibly put @ Amistad in Del Rio. The Flicka might be a candidate.

We have a custom built Flicka with an aft cabin similar to a Nor'sea 27. The boats dimensions are 27' LOA, 20' LOD, 8' beam, 3.9', 7,200 lb. displacement with 60 gallons of water and 22 gallons of diesel. She carries 400 sq ft of sail cutter rig and is capable of voyaging to the far reaches of the oceans.
We rebuilt and refitted the boat over a 5 year period with the idea of "changing careers" and cruising as long as it was fun. Well we are close to that point and now feel the boat is too small. The main problem is the dinghy/liftraft storage issue. We thought we would go with a Tinker Tramp sailing inflatable with also serves as a liferaft when equipped with its survival package. The problem is, when folded, boat occupies a space of 17"x22"x45" or 9.7 cu ft. We planned to store it in the V-berth but the V-berth must also serve as a foc's'le when making a passage.
We both want to go with this boat. It is about ready for cruising. We have tried to find other people who cruise on small boats but have no been successful. Your page on the perfect boat is neat but I noticed you have a 30' boat which is well built and equipped.
Your comments regarding this matter would be deeply appreciated. Your website is great except the link to the 15' cruising boat does not exist.

Dave,
Received your reply by mail... thanks for the encouragement! It seems we do have quite a bit in common! Do you still live aboard? M'Lady sounds like a wonderful vessel. Did you raise your son's on board? If so, what was their attitude about the live aboard lifestyle? My son is 12 yrs. old. His attitude varies on the subject. Originally he was gun-ho on the idea... now he seems a bit reserved, sort of likes it, yet he likes our house alot, too. I don't want to ram the concept down his throat, but I do want him to be just as hungry for sailing and the live aboard lifestyle as I am. So, for now I'm gearing back... still looking at what's out there, but trying not to burn him out on the idea. Perhaps, in time he'll become more enthusiastic.
I have a deep, burning desire to get into a live aboard arrangement. It's almost as if a force is pulling me to the marina's in search of my boat... the sea is calling with such intensity that ache with desire to answer her. I once was a commercial swordfisherman (long-line). We would go out for two or three weeks at a time, working from the crack o' dawn to dusk, taking turns at the helm on night-watch through the night. We'd work right through squalls, though it got alot more difficult being tossed about the deck. I loved it. It was wild... I felt closer to God. My hands grew to twice their normal size from fish poisoning, but I did'nt mind so much. The sea was my playground... life was filled with adventure and challenge! I rode on the edge of my existance with the salt in my veins, loving it like I belonged there, roving free over mountains of water.
I miss it.
Keep in touch, brother!
Joris

I have a interesting story to tell. I grew up sailing with my father on a sail boat in the puget sound. And yes the boat was named M'lady! I had many good times with that boat and hope to see the captain and her crew together again soon! The Ironic part of this story is, I never dreamed of sailing for a living, if you can call it that! I am Curently on a six month cruse with my squadren aboard AMERICAS FLAG SHIP U.S.S.CONSTELLATION. Yes, if you were wondering I am in the NAVY, and I have to admit this beats a desk job hands down! The Captain of M'LADY (My Father Dave Amundson) will soon join me on a tiger cruise on the carier. This is a cruise set up for family members to get the chance to sail aboard the constellation. I pick up my father in Bremerton W.A. It is somthing I have wanted to do for a while! I do not curently own a boat of my own. However I know some time in the not so far future my carrier will lead me in to the desk job of Phisician's Assistant. And I am sure that my memories of the worlds water ways will lead me to A sailboat of my own. Well in closing I want to wish you fair winds and steady seas, and for all you off shore sailer's,
STEADY DECKS!
Thankyou.

I am an ancient mariner trapped in the body of a Senior Computer Graphics Operator, working at a company called USBI at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. I am a 46 yr. old single father of a fine 12 yr. old son, Jesse. I have lived here in Brevard County, FL since 1957, am a Veteran (USAF), a home-owner, and an artist. Born January 28, 1951, in Pavillons-sous-Bois, Seinne (approx. 30km N.E. of Paris), France, I have been in and around boats most of my life, and was a commercial swordfisherman for about 3 yr's. in my 20's. Now divorced for 6 1/2 yr's., it has become my goal to find a live-aboard cruising sailboat for my son and I, and either leasing my home, or trading it for a boat between 36 and 42 feet in length. In that case I could trade my equity in the house as a down-payment, and the interested party could assume my low interest loan, thereby freeing up my single income that it may be solely focused on paying off the boat (and related expenses). Having no woman to argue the dream, I am determined to follow it like a bitch in heat. I live, hounded with the desire to sail and raise my son in a sailing environment. He's all for it, though he tires of me talking about it day and night, month after month. I'm so pleased to have found you on the internet... I shall follow you religiously. Please advise me if you have any suggestions which could aid me in my search. I value the advice of the experienced seaman. I have no computer of my own, ergo no e-mail address. My home address is:

Hello boat fried, I am a swiss hatmaker. I stay in India since 1963 every winter. Some 12 years ago I started building boats. First wharram designs, then my design similar to wharram. I want something new. I am a one man sailor. Sailing along the Konkani coast araound Goa, from dec to march, near Cap da Ram where Vasco Da Gama landed 500 years ago. I wish I had some friends there to join me in boat building. It`s extremely cheap in India. Ply, epoxy and polyester are all there. Helpers are near to nothing, 60 Indian rupees per day, two dollars a day. I want to build a light catamaran or Proa. I must be able to shift the boat from the waterline up the beach to a sure place during night time and all alone. There are lots of rebbers, thiefs, burglars, murderers during night time. During day time it`s OK although I was attaced during daytime by four men in a dougouth. I managed to cheace them away. I carry a long knife and a speargun with rubber ressorts.
Would be nice to hear from you.

Thank you for your information about the Pacific Seacraft. I am one of those dreamers. However, I am slowly pursuing. My wife and I have taken the Coast Gaurd Seamanship classes and plan to take classes at Orange Coast community college. I approach my everyday life asking myself, "How can I use this experience to survive on the sea?". For instance, I am an electrical engineer by profession, but not a pure engineering geek. I have a variety of skills which have recently been put to the test when I was laid off from Rockwell corporation after only 6 months of employement. (the division was shutdown.) Since then I have teamed up with a guy who is a Hydraulics expert. I have never worked with hydraulics. I am now servicing industrial machinery and packaging machinery. I love doing this because I look at it as learning a skill in which I can use at sea and in dock when I need money.

Anyway, I have been researching for a couple of years to try to decide what is a good boat to buy for bluewater. The problem I see is there is such a wide range in price. I am totally confused by what I see. Thus far all I know is that I need a full keel, sloop rigged, single handed rigged, and somewhere between 30 and 40 feet length. I what something that is foremost safe as my wife and soon to born child will be with me. I am not rich. So what I see as a price range will be less than $100,000.00 preferably less than $50,000. I do not want to be a slave to payments, to me this is one of the purposed for crusing is to leave those types of responsibilities behind.

By the way I am 30 years old with my first child on the way. I do not want to sail as a retiree, who knows if I will live that long. I want to live now. I would appreciate any advice that you could give as to ways of searching for a safe, seaworthy, cheap, easy to sail boat, and ways to get there before I have grandchildern.

Many thanks for reading this rambiling.
Sincerly
Andrew

Oriana (1977 Islander 30 MKII) was our first liveaboard, and we loved her. Seeing your interior shots tugs at the heartstrings - identical, except for interior colors (ours were mauve and gray (she came to us that way)). This design is so cozy here in the San Juan Islands. (Our homeport for sentimental reasons is Arch Cape, Oregon. However, we live in Deer Harbor (Orcas Island), Washington. We were recently able to step WAY up, to a Baba 30, which we found in our own "backyard", and which was so beautiful and perfect that we quite in love with that boat ("Copper") now. Oriana was such a wonderful introduction to liveaboard life for us, and we will never forget her. We took many pictures of her, from the date of her initial survey to the date we sailed her to the broker in Bellingham. She was in really good shape, inside and out, and sold as soon as the sailing season picked up this year.

We feel very nostalgic about our first liveaboard boat, and we know her new owners (who took her from Everett to Pt. Townsend the weekend after they bought her) will love her as much as we did. (Yours truly, who is a stay-at-home "boatwife" especially loved the dinette arrangement. )
Thanks for inviting us aboard.

Like having to row in when the 5:00 calm set in!! They have survived it to do it again ... once getting towed in by a motorist who took pity!! visit our page someday if you have the time http://www.oocities.org/thetropics/shores/2587 some day I may even have it looking good! We are currently trying to figure out how to load so of our restoration pictures up so people can see what a fantastic boat builder we have here!!

Well, when I'm in my bath tub I get my little rubber boat out and sail around. I have all kinds of little people aboard, we are drinking ice cold beer and eating fresh salmon. Some day I may move up to a bigger bath tub and maybe a plastic boat. I'm thinking a foot in length or so. Then I can get little bigger people. It will be a least five years, by then my support payments will be over! Till then I will be drinking water and sailing the bathtub seas.
Talk to you later!!

I don't think they were too impressed with Texas weather. Let me know if you need an extra crew member sometime. I can be talked into sailing just about anytime. A few general clarifications. I have two boats. One (the Allied 36 Seaquestor) is located about a 4 hour drive from home. That boat is in the water from mid-May to Mid-September. I spent 42 days sailing her last summer. I also have a 7.4 m (24.3 foot) Challenger sloop which is on a lake 15 minutes from my office. I sail that boat every day that weather permits. I hope to retire in about 4 years and then to take my Allied 36 to the west coast and then on to, at least, Hawaii. Ultimately, I plan to relocate to Puget Sound in Washington State, where I grew up.

Just bought it a week before hurricane FRAN. I have replaced the standing/running rigging the interior hull covering removed cleaned and replaced all the interior wood. Cleaned the rust/corrosion stains off the sails cleand green pine sap/needles/dirt off hull.

The boat sat on a trailer in theowners' back yard under pine trees for 8 years prior to my purchase. 8 years. I did some serious cleaning, inside and out. I have just about gotten her ready to go. The last step is the 7.5 Mercury outboard. The bvoat has a full galley, head, sleeps 4 comfortably, bow pulpit/lifelines/stern rail draws 2 feet board up/5feet board down. It dispalces 2800 lbs, has only 800 lead in the swing keel. I bought a 160 Genoa, in lieu of a spinnaker, as I will be single-handing most of the time.

I will be cruising the North Carolina coast, within the outer banks at first. Who knows where from there. The temptation to trailer it to Miami, launch it and head for the Bahamas is very strong. I wonder though, just how much the islands have been corrupted by now? Are they really worth seeing ? Or should the Florida Keys/Dry Tortugas be considered ?

Anyway, nice web site, Very nice Boat. I wish you only the best of luck.

Fair winds,
Dave Hord

Dave,
This is your old dockmate from Tyee, John Myers of "ARETE", the Morgan IO30. My girlfriend, Geni Hawkins (I think you met her, the cute little redhead) and I bought an Ed Monk designed yawl last July. We've been working our butts off ever since. I've been telling everyone that I had too much spare time and money, so I bought a 53 year old wood boat! Ha ha! Let me give you her specs, then I'll tell you what we've been doing. She was built in 1943 at the Edson Technical School on Lake Union. She's 42'LOD, 47'LOA and 38' on the waterline, 11'beam, 6' draft, 38,000 lb. displacement, 11,000 lb. of ballast. She has main, staysail, jib, and mizzen. Her mainmast rises 55' above the water. She was owned by Cap Renaud (the skipper of the schooner "Adventuress") from 1966 to 1986. In 1986 he sold her to a couple of pinheaded idiots that were enthralled with the romance of the sea, and dreamed of sailing away from it all. Unfortunately, they had no sailing experience, and couldn't handle a boat that big, and knew nothing of how to maintain a large wooden sailboat. Consequently, she was used as a dockside party boat, and no attention was paid to maintenance or repair. We got her for 22k! And you guessed it, there are reasons we got her that cheap. To begin with, all her chainplates had to be replaced immediately. They were made of steel (and not even galvanized) and installed thru the teak deck. They were all rusted thru. The mainsail had to be replaced, and the other three sails all needed repairs. All the running rigging, and much of the associated hardware had to be replaced. After all that, and a coat of paint on the cabin (six weeks of hard labor!), we were sailing! And she is a delight to sail! We're laying her up this winter, as we have to recaulk the decks, and strip the paint off hull and repaint. And that's just the projects scheduled for this year. I'm going to send this off now, but I'll be in touch, now that I know where to find you.
Happy sailing!

We, my wife Terri and I, mainly sail on Fern Ridge Lake here in Eugene, OR. The lake has over 9300 acres and most of it is sailable. We have good winds most of the time and are able to sail from early March/April to late Sept/Oct. We also trailer our boat to Puget Sound each year in the early summer and sail for a couple weeks. Eight years ago when I turned forty, I was looking for a much needed hobby....when, low and behold, up sailed a small sailboat while I was out walking around a nearby lake. That's how it all began....and I hope it never ends.

My 1'st true crewing expereince found me going overboard while taking down a wing-to-wing on Lake Texoma during the Turkey Trot Regatta, Thanksgiving, several years ago. Crewed on and off after that until I married another sailor wanna-be and he took me to Germany (he was in the Army) and we took sailing courses together on Lake Chiemsee in the Bavarian Alps. IT WAS WONDERFUL. Grand finale of our "intermediate" sailing course was to take out a 12-meter racer in blustery weather...spinnaker run took us across the lake in 30 minutes. Took us 3-4 hours to come back. with six full-grown adults trapezed out. Haven't sailed since I became a "Mommy" but swear to soon...and to introduce my daughter to it as well!

Basically he takes me along because I'm Italian and one knows that the greatest sailors are and were Italians. In the summer of 94 we sailed to the northern reaches of Vancouver Island on the Tsunami. The summer of 95 found us sailing up the West Coast of Vancouver Island to Barkley Sound. The summer of 96 I ventured away from the sailing life and went with another friend to Ucluelet. We fished out of his 18' Whaler for five days. Dave keep the winds at your back and a tight line. She's been in almost every port from Olympia to Bellingham in the Puget Sound. Tsunami is sailed year'round, and is a crusing boat. My racing as you know has been aboard M'Lady. And by the way, I miss that racing stuff, so I look forward to you coming back to the NW waters, M'Lady. May the winds be at your back...

Once upon a time I ventured upon the seas with the likes of 'Dave the Wave' and his mottly crew. We sailed the four points and wherever else old salts go stood watch from the heaving decks of the fine vessle known as M'lady and also labored from her spinning bowels. I love this sailing s___.! I've see the fine line of her stern while chum'in for bottom feeders and soared atop her mast while effecting minor repairs. I love this sailing s___ ! Ventured beneath the depths of some 'fine ale' while riding out the 'big blow' at Crows Nest marina, and the fine lines of her keel with grinder, scraper, and brush working like an artist. I say she's part of me and part mine by now. Always true, knocked down or with spinaker full, she's never tenative or fickle just ready to the touch of her master. Never deceitful or vain, she glides upon any tempest. She's M'lady. Are we still actively racing? Get the sunscreen ready sailor, I'm ready for Mexico.

This is how one of the pages on The Rosewell Resort reads:
I fell in love with her the very first time I laid eyes on her. And you'll say: "Love at first sight is all bunk", "doesn't happen", "rubbish", etc, etc.... Well, that day in May 1985 in the city of Varberg on the West Coast of Sweden, I fell irrevocally in love with Lyla Florine! Her name then wasn't Lyla Florine - it was Mamsell, and she belonged to another man. I vowed then and there she would be mine - whatever it would take. She's no longer mine but I love her just the same. She looked much like on the picture below when I saw her in the huge warehouse where she'd been laid up by her owner (her 4th in 29 years) for the previous two years. Due to a divorce she was now for sale. Having just arrived in Sweden some 5 months ago, it wasn't a very smart move to commit to her, but like any man (or woman?) in love, I was beyond reasoning!

Been sailing since I was 10 years old. Sailed about 30 different makes of boats, and I race for fun a couple of times a year.
Been in the Harvest Moon Regatta - 153 mi race from Galveston to Port Aransas on the Gulf, took us 24 hours from start to finish.
I've had some more entertaining cruises - but you'll have to ask me about those via email!

Loved your page on M'Lady! Looks like a great boat!

I was first introduced to the Yucatan and the Caribbean in September of 1975. I was lured into a Club Med trip to Cancun. I had never been scuba diving so I took lessons to dive on that trip. I never did quit diving and have returned to the Yucatan many times on business and pleasure. I am now a PADI open water instructor. Livng in New Orleans at the time, I was exposed to many boats of all sizes and types. Hanging out at the marina listening to Jimmy Buffett was the order of the day on any given day off or weekend. I wanted a yacht of my own and then I witnessed the fueling of a 60'Hatteras during the first oil crunch. A sailboat soon became the answer. Many years later, (1986) I bought a 24' Windrose, with a wheel. I never had sailed, but I owned the boat. The owner took me out in Offets Bayou (61st Street in Galveston) and told me this is a sheet, this is a halyard, and a few other key points. After this one hour lesson, I was on my way. I had been reading sailing magazines for ten years. My fist over the horizon passage was to the ferry crossing between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula. I was always on the ferry waving at the sailboats. It was my turn to wave at the ferry. In 1996 I now have a 28' Newport. Do things in my life happen in ten year increments? Maybe that is how long the chapters are. The SV Luna Sea is in Portofino Marina in Clear Lake. We are very near the bay as the marina is almost under the Seabrook bridge.
I sailed a 50' Gulfstar ketch from Cozumel to Galveston. Three of us pulled random watches on a five day passage with the iron ginny running, full sails and autopilot. We were accompanied by migratory birds as we departed Isla Mujeres on Easter Sunday. I have about four hours of edited video tape. We need to talk or this will story will get into novel proportions when I tell you about trips to Belize, driving to Guatamala and diving in Honduras.

Being on the water is like being in the womb. You rock back and forth, you flow, you glide you are lifted. You are free.

My greatest adventure was sailing around Cape Flattery at 1:30 AM with a watch partner constantly singing "all she wants is to have a baby".... And of course hearing the story of the "deep sea DUMP" from this quivering mass of jelly who was dead on his feet...

I've only gotten sea sick on two of the seven seas (PAC and IO). I've only had two fires, one collision, one grounding, and one duty night which I've been a woke and informed that there was six feet of water in the engine room. I've sucked rubber for a few hours while being below 200 ft, and in a gamma and neutron flux. I've spent 60 days in a live minefield on an old wooden ship.

Hey guy, you better include the story about the infamous Commencement Bay/Tacoma fireboat rescue story. Bet you haven't been able to beat that one! I'm waiting to see if you can come up with one better.....
