Banyan Trees

Banyan trees, with their peculiar exposed root structures, are a common sight on Okinawa. They are at certain times of the year very popular with the large fruit bats that inhabit the island. I am fortunate enough to have several such trees in my yard, which means that I also get lots of visiting bats.

On one evening, I sat out on my patio with a beer and watched about 20-odd bats feeding in one of my banyan trees -- as these bats are rather large (about a three-foot wingspan fully grown), it made for an impressive sight. The most amusing aspect was watching the bats squabble over who would get to feed on which branch; to me, one branch would seem much like another, but of course fruit-bearing trees are something that the bats know far more about than I.
