The fortress-like monastery at Sakya once represented the seat of absolute spiritual and temporal authority in Tibet. Now, however, the monastery stands almost forgotten in a lonely valley, about 20 miles from the Friendship Highway, while the leadership of the Tibetan people has passed to the Dalai Lama and the Gelukpa Tibetan Buddhist order. This image was taken at about 14,000 feet and has not been altered.
