Caldeira
Some of the only features visible on satellite pictures of Faial, are the enormous crater or Caldeira and the adjacent mountain of Cabeço Gordo, which stand right in the centre of the island.G From the top of the mountain, the whole of Faial island can be seen, as well as the contours of Pico and the more distant islands of São Jorge and Graciosa, if the sky is clear. The clear sky also enables grand views of the bottom of the crater and the surrounding vegetation.
Cabeço Gordo stands 1043 metres high and is the highest point of the island. Caldeira is a formation of volcanic origin, and its crater has a diameter of about 1450m and a depth of 400m. The viewpoint can be reached by crossing a short tunnel, and from there on, walking is possible to the top of the mountain. Those wishing to visit the bottom of Caldeira should have the company of someone experienced in the trail. Down there you will find small lakes which are said to be connected straight to the sea.
