Discovering Horta

Horta was made a city and given a coat of arms by the Portuguese King D. Luiz, on May 3rd 1865. The town of horta occupies the southeastern part of the island, naturally protected by the Headlands of Espalamaca, and the hills of Carneiro, das Moças, Queimado and da Guia. The city formed itself in amphitheater around the bay of Horta with an excellent panoramic view of the Channel and the perpetually present island of Pico. It includes the parishes of Conceição, Matriz, and Angústias.
