Discovering Horta

Continuing past the Church of Our Lady of Angústias, whose origin dates to the 15th century, the bay of Porto Pim (which is Flemish for safe harbour) is reached. There is the beach of the same name, wonderfully protected by the mountains of Queimado and da Guia, with its lighter sand and quiet waters. Around this area was built a defensive system of 3 fortresses in the 17th century, to defend the the entrance of the bay from pirates and enemy ships. Returning through the Pasteleiro area, we come across the football ground of Angústias Atlético Clube, the ancient warehouses which are now home to a large supermarket, and by the Hospital of Horta. On top of the Moças mountain and with a privileged view of the city, stands the Weather Observatory built in 1915 by Prince Albert of Monaco.
