Numerous traces of human activity, going back as far as the early Paleolithic age, bear witness to the antiquity of the population. From Phoenician rule to the independence, in 1956, Tunisia's history has always been distinguished by a remarkable sequence of invasions and different influences : Berber, Phoenician, Roman and Arab-Muslim. Tunisia was the first country in the Maghreb to be set under Arab rule. Today, the country appears to be a stronghold of stability in the region.
