POSADA TURISTICA "PAPA MIGUEL" La Mesa de los Indios, calle Piñango Nro. 1 (about 5 km west of Ejido, via the continuation of the main street throught that town). A marvelous surprise in this remote mountain village. A delightful retreat, rustic in design, but rich in details both of decoration and attention by super friendly owner Arminda Mercado. The main building housing restaurant/bar (only for guests at the posada), and kitchen was indeed the home of Arminda´s grandfather, "Papá Miguel". A courtyard paved in rustic tiles separating this structure from another of the same colonial style with 10 confortable guest rooms (each with private bath and hot water). A major expansion was carried out this past year which has added very handsome new spaces (with the same styling to maintain a unifield look - which now gives the compound the charming aspect of the street a tiny mountain village lined with buildings of varying heights and with interesting angles of their roofs, without affecting the cozy feeling of the original grouping. At the entrance, a 2-story unit has been installed which adds 3 ample new guest rooms in the upper level united by a continuos balcony-passage running in front with view over the courtyard. These form the "roof" of a covered parking area. At the other extreme of the compound, a large covered terrace with nice view has been built with BBQ to one side (plus a small area for sale of local crafts - including the beautiful crocheted bed coverlets made by Arminda´s mother) - a marvelous space with pretty view for informal meals plus serving as a thoroughly inviting tasca for guests to relax after a day exploring the surrounding area. The former dining room, kitchen, and bar have been remodeled to create more functional and diverse spaces, including adding a cozy café. In all, ths has been the continuation of a plan of growth which has made the already very appeating posada even better. With their package plans (ask when you call for reservations, we have various ones that change with the season) of 3 or more nights, special activities ara included such as bonfire with local musicians playing typical Andean music. A night of traditional stories and "guarapita" (sweet but potent "white lightning") excursions to nearby thermal springs in a river, visits to the "Pueblos del Sur" - small towns in remote areas of the mountains where time seems to have stood still, making corn husk dolls...Honeymooners in o room with balcony overlooking the courtyard receive a serenade by night plus bottle of delicious locally-made dessert wine and bouquet of flowers in the room. During the Christmas season, we have a traditional Andean-style dinner and seasonal music performed live. Special program is also offered for "health and rest", particulary directed to older visitors with special exercises, very health-conscious meals based on all natural foods, visits to the hot springs, walk to interesting sites in the area, plenty of traquillity, and a discounted price, Moreover, there is a unique hand-crafted gift for guests in each room. Price includes welcome cocktail, breakfast and dinner. "Highly recommended". Elizabeth Kline´s. "Guide to camps Posadas & Cabins". Venezuela 1999.
