BALINESE MUSIC AND DANCE
A traditional type of Indonesian music is called "gamelan." Balinese gamelan music is unique and quite different from gamelan music in other provinces of Indonesia. The gamelan musicians shown below are a group called Gamelan Tunas Mekar who perform in Denver,Colorado.
Dance is often performed along with gamelan music. One type of Balinese dance that is often performed is a traditional masked dance called "topeng." The topeng dance shown below was performed by a single artist who changes masks during the performance to depict several different characters such as a warrior, an old man and an ugly woman as a story is told in music and dance. The topeng dancer tells a story between movements of the gamelan music.
