Goethals Memorial School.

A pair of covered walkways now connects the classrooms to the rest of the school complex. Behind the buildings a dense forest of pine trees and exotic shrubbery covers the hillside. Our weekly class walks would often take us up through this forest along a narrow road paved with rocks of all sizes and shapes. We would pass by "Mt. Carmel", a residence for young brothers, and continue on to "Red Cross" and "Rolly Polly" situated near the top of the hill. A strenuous walk indeed. This area was quite secluded and literally covered with raspberry bushes. The bushes in turn would be drooping with delicious ripened red and yellow berries. We stopped to eat our fill and collect enough to take back to school for a late evening treat. Our clean white handkerchiefs would come in handy as a makeshift bag. We returned to school in time for our afternoon tea. |
