A walk to town, perhaps 3 miles from GMS, was always a welcome break for us all. Normally the town was "out of bounds" but on certain weekends and especially on 'Feast Days' we were allowed to explore the little town all we wanted. Those of us who hadn't already blown our monthly allowances would head off to town in our school uniforms to catch the latest Western flicks and enjoy 'chow chow' at the many restaurants catering to the tastes of the students from the various schools. The changing times have not been very kind to Kurseong nor has the continuing political situation. Just around the block from the white mini van, the old 'Plaza cinema hall' stands pad-locked, boarded-up and silent for the last decade or so with no signs of re-opening again. For many of us the Plaza was a favourite rendezvous on our outings. |
