Day 8

Sue

After a country style breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast we went on a long walk through the countryside. Russell pointed out several native birds and trees to the area. His dogs, Digger, Maddie & Jess ran along side during the walk looking for rabbits. It was quite comical to see the little dog trying to keep up with the whippets.

Russell pointed out an old gum tree with a canoe shape hollowed out of it. He reckons over a hundred years ago the Aboriginal people hollowed out the tree to make a canoe to fish on the river. There is a picture of this tree with the photos.

After the lunch we drove to the Ebenezer Mission. I found this very interesting since I just wrote a paper on the Stolen Generation of Aboriginal people. This was one of the missions I read about. It certainly brought history to life for me.

Once everyone was rested we went yabbie fishing. Erica, Amanda & Adam tossed the nets into the damn and we waited patiently for the yabbies to come take the bait. Russell took the kids out to the paddocks to look at sheep bones (which thrilled the children .. they were not happy with me when I told them I didn't think we should take the bones through customs).

Gail made an incredible dinner that night of lamb, pumpkin and roast potatoes. After tea we all piled into the back of the ute to drive up the hill and watch the sunset which was spectacular. The sky was all sorts of colours, even green!

Once the sun set we headed back to the house to play Australian Trivial Pursuit. Needless to say, Amanda and I came in last, but it was great fun!
