Naples

We went to downtown Naples and passed the Royal Palace,
the opera house and the Church of St. Francis and traveled by
the Castle of the Egg which dominates the harbor of Santa Lucia.
We went to the Piazza della Borso, home of the elaborate Stock
Exchange Building  and the Galleria Umberto, which is lined with
beautiful street lamps and 19th century buildings.  Some of the
most elegant shops and cafes are found here.  We also went to a
cameo factory and watched these artists carve them.  The
Neapolitans have a great love for music and with such songs as
... Santa Lucia, O Sole Mio, and Funiculi Funicla ..
the city's music has become familiar all over the world.
The famous tenor Enrico Caruso was born in Naples and
half of the Italian side of my family did also! ;-)

POMPEII

This famous excavated city is about 14 miles east of Naples and
the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. covered Pompeii with
30 feet of volcanic ash and stone.  Numerous excavations have
taken place during the past 200 years and it is now the most
preserved specimen of an ancient Roman town in existence.

As you enter Pompeii by the Porta Marina, the ancient gate,
a short walk brings you to the hub of the city, the Forum.

Because of it's great size, it is said that it could hold all of the
inhabitants of the city.  Amazingly, they've made plaster casts
of human bodies found during the excavations.

The paintings on numerous buildings and homes were very
well preserved and some would be considered pornographic.

We've been here twice and I'm looking forward to our third
visit to this most extraordinary city in Italy.
