Three weeks of South-East Asia...
It is almost been three weeks now we've been in Asia and I've got to say that it is a lot nicer than I expected! The experience we had with Bangkok about ten months ago wasn't that spectacular so probably that had something to do with that.
It didn't took long before we went of with the train to Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur was our destination. For those who saw Entrapment: Kuala Lumpur is the city where the Twin-Towers are located. This city was so different to what we expected of it! It truly is super, super modern! The most spectacular buildings and most sophisticated ways of transport. For instance, this is the place where they have the world's longest monorail system without driver and they had the world's highest building for a while as well (Twin-Towers).
In KL we had a great and very cosy hostel and the tour we did in the evening was perfect. We met a dutch couple, a few Irish girls and two canadian girls and together we had a great night. We ended up in the nightlife of KL. Very good atmosphere but ex-tre-me-ly expensive!!
From Kuala Lumpur we went to Penang, another city more in the northern part of Malaysia. A crab place! We arrived there at three in the afternoon and left at seven the next morning. We were heading to Kho Phan Gnang, a tropical island east of Thailands mainland. Travelling by minivan is very tiring and takes an eternity but when we finally arrived at the island it had been worth it! Even though we arrive in the middel of the night, the island vibrates a great atmosphere. The next morning the weather is perfect and we're able to see what the island looks like in daylight. The green structure of the island is very open and that with the roads mainly made of sand makes it a real island-feel!
We stay in a bungalow with two canadian guys (the girls were in a different minivan and we hadn't met them yet) who we met on the boat to the island. Apparently Haadrin Beach was the place to be, so that's where we went. White beaches, palm trees and lovely warm water. Bikes are here in Asia THE way of transport so when we decide to have a look around the island we rent a couple of them. It's very cheap as well. Helmets have not been invented there yet even though these machines easily drive more than 100 k's per hour! We drive around the whole island and it is simply beautiful!
In the evening we also meet up with the candian girls again and with the six of us we enjoy a great meal in one of the many good places on the beach. Here in Thailand you can see the latest movies in all the cafe's without paying for it! The illegal copy is the most normal thing there. After seeing two movies (entrapment and american pie which is an excellent movie!!) we went to the beach to get some drinks in. We were with the six of us and met up with two other guys on the beach as well. After having had six of those mix-drinks, so one and a half bottle of whisky, i went for a piss in the ocean and then for some reason i just crashed on the sand!! I couldn't get my head up anymore and just kept on digging holes on the beach and puked my guts out! Sorry for this disgusting story; but now that i started i'll have to continue of course! So this was at about two o'clock. The others went back around 2.30, but had to leave me there near the waterfront because i simply could not stand up at all!! And i can tell you, i did not enjoy that fact very much! So, there i lay, trying to focus on the moon, but it was hard, very hard! I tried a few times to get up, but it was useless to try. So, finally i fell asleep and at 5.30 in the morning i woke up and felt... crap as!! But i could walk a bit and made it to the hut. Completely sandy i fell in my bed and slept till one in the afternoon. I felt quite bad when i woke up you can imagine and the rest of the day my eyes just looked so BAD that i couldn't do anything else than keep my sunnies on all the time! It's nine in the evening whn i feel ok again, but no sang tip for me this night! It's just so suddenly that you get hit by that stuff; completely different to beer where you know when to stop! The thai massage on the beach in the afternoon made me feel a bit better again but it was so strange to wake up in at that beach! Everybody was gone, even the tables! Well, that's what you get when you appreciate the local mix-drinks!
The next day we do basically nothing. A bit of hanging around on the beach, enjoying a real thai-massage and swimming is about it! That night we don't try the local drink again. Read about this evening in the fairy-tale below:
Well, after having read the story about our Kho Phan Gnang experience you can probably imagine that it was an awesome time there! So if you plan on going to Thailand, go to this island!! Don't go to Kho Samui or Phuket or something, they are far more touristy! We've been to Phuket as well but there is absolutly no comparison at all! Kho Phan Gnang is all backpackers and that gives a great atmosphere. We stayed in Phuket for one day. We rented a bike again and drove around the island. Here also beautiful beaches and palm trees, but you can see them in so many places....
Back to Bangkok. Not a luxurious hotel this time for us as we had ten months ago. After hearing from a lot of people about this Kho Shan Road area we find a nice place there. It indeed is a perfect location and very cosy. It's already the first night that we meet up agian with the four candian people we met before.
Read about the things we did at night:
Pad Pong and the eight backpackers...
The next evening we go a Thai-boxing arena. We get to see quite a few fights. Quite interesting, but also quite boring until one of those guys puts his knee on the other guy's nose... Knock out!! Whoehoe, how interesting all of a sudden! All together we stay for one week in Bangkok. That's long enough for a town like this. You can see another temple here every hour, but if you ask me... they are all the same!
Today it's already thursday again and our plane leaves to the Netherlands tomorrow... Very bizar... We are both looking forward to go back home again. The trip was an extremely good experience and we're definitely are going to do it again, but for now, it has been long enough and time to go back home!!
