Janské Lázne

A mountain spa town below Cerna hora (Black Mountain), with warm and slightly radioactive springs, which is situated west of Svoboda nad Upou. Their healing effects have been known and made use of by the local people since the first settlement.

The place belonged to the domain of Vlcice. The owner of this domain Jan Adolf of Schwarzenberg is considered to be the founder of the spa because he had 6 new spa buildings built in 1677. The consequences of polio in children are successfully treated here nowadays.

There is a nicely kept square with spa buildings, Art Noveau colonnade and a statue of Krakonos in the town. The original cable car was built in 1928 but a new gondola supplanted it in the 1980s. The upper station (1.299 m) is a starting point for many beautiful hikes on the mountain ridges.
