Pec pod Snezkou

Pec is a recreation center of international importance in the eastern Krkonose Mts. The center is situated among the valleys below the highest Krkonose peak and thus offers ideal conditions for summer tourism and skiing.

The settlement originated in connection with ore mining in Obri dul (Giant Mine) in the 16th century.

Another group of local residents worked in forestry cutting wood and skidding it down the Upa river to the mines in Kutna Hora. There were also furnaces for iron and arsenic ore smeltering.

The name of the settlements comes probably from the Czech workers who worked there. Meadow enclaves which were formed on mountain hillsides became the basis for farming during the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the 19th century tourism was successfully developed. The development of tourism grew bigger especially after World War II when the chair lift to Ruzova hora (Pink Mountain) and Snezka was built.
