Spindleruv Mlýn

Spindleruv Mlýn is the most important mountain center in the Krkonose Mts. It has an excellent position in the valley of the Labe at the confluence of the river with Dolsky potok (brook).

It is protected from all sides by ridges of the Bohemian Ridge (Kozi hrbety, Predni and Zadni Planina, Medvedin, Zelezna hora and so on). It is an ideal starting point for hiking trips into mountain valleys such as Dlouhy dul, the valley of Bile Labe and Labsky dul.

The mountain ridges can be reached by chair lifts (Medvedin, Plane) and by a mountain road to Slezske sedlo and Spindlerova bouda where there is also a bus connection. There is a wide variety of accommodation possibilities in various parts of the town: Svaty Petr, Bedrichov, Labska and Volsky Dul.

Historical sources mention the town already in the 16th century in connection with mining on the shoulders of Kozi hrbety (Goat's ridges) and Stoh. Labska, (formerly called Krausovy Boudy) was a residential place for lumberjacks from the Alpine countries authorized by district administrator Christopher of Gendorf to cut forests and drift the timber to Kutna Hora.

The Labe river used to be a boundary between the Jilemnice domain of the Harrachs (including Bedrichov) and the Vrchlabi domain of the Czernins-Morzins. Today's center of the town is situated around the church of St. Peter and Paul (the today's form is from 1807) on the shoulder of Kozi hrbety.

Development speeded up in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the travel, tourism and winter sports industries set in and it was finished in the period after the World War II. Spindleruv Mlýn is accessible both for buses and cars by the road going through the valley of the Labe river from Vrchlabi.
