In the tenth century, when Madrid and Paris where in there infancy, 300,000 people lived in the Moorish metropolis of Cordoba. Its magnificent Great Mosque was one of several hundred in the city. *

Despite a summer thunderstorm, we managed to get a couple of quick pictures...During the rain the Mezquita looked like a fire boat on parade--torrents of water shot out from the gargoyles into the middle of the street.

Map of Cordoba showing the Mezquita, or Great Mosque. The Mezquita was originally constructed between 785 and 787, but the building has evolved over the centuries, including the addition of a cathedral in the middle of the mosque during the 16th century.

The Torre del Alminar is 305 ft. high.
