Recognition: Medium large. This pigeon and its close relatives can be distinguished from all other pigeons by a half collar of the neck. Good size, general dark-brown plumage and the absence of any white in the tail distinguishes this particular dove, Its call-note is the best distinction. |
Distribution:. Throughout West Africa but in the northern parts it is mainly confined to river valleys |
Habits: Solitary or in groups. Often perch on tree-tops to call. From this perch the male will ascend with loud clapping flight and glide down again with down-curved wings in display. It is fond of water and in the driest months tends only to be found near water. It feeds on a variety of foods on the ground, notably ground nuts and peppers. The breeding season is long but nests found chiefly in the dry season near water. |
Call: A very characteristic "coo, KOO, coo, coo, coo, coo" and a mewing call when the bird alights |
