Mobile telephony in Hungary

The cellular phone penetration is about 75% (about 7.614 million subscribers) in October 2003.

Mobile operators:

Westel900: The market leader GSM operator (about 3.414 million active subscribers in October 2003). A subsidiary of the Hungarian Telecommunications Company (Matáv).
Pannon GSM: The second GSM operator (about 2.550 million active subscribers in October 2003). A subsidiary of Telenor Mobile from Norway.
Vodafone: The third GSM operator that has started its service in December 1999 (about 1.153 million active subscribers in October 2003). A joint venture of Vodafone (50.1%), Antenna Hungária (30%) and RWE Telliance (19.9%).

Inactive GSM subscriptions in october 2003:: according to Hírközlési Főfelügyelet, about 497,000 SIM cards have not produced any activity in the three previous months

Nokia Hungary

Milestones:

1993: Contract with Pannon GSM for a full GSM network
1995: Established new monitor factory in Pécs
1997: Established new SW R&D center in Budapest
2000: Sold the monitor factory in Pécs to Elcoteq
2000: Opened a new mobile phone factory in Komárom
