WAVES

Sugar Beach Resort is located adjacent 6 miles of beautiful open beach. Sugar Beach a.k.a. “Speed Beach” is located next to the Kealia Bird Sanctuary. This gives the wind a flat area over which to travel as it comes from the north shore of Maui to the south. It accelerates as it wraps around Haleakala volcano and is deflected by the west Maui mountains. This usually gives us more wind than on the north shore.

Most afternoons in the summer and when the wind is more northerly in the winter, it blows at Sugar Beach. It will usually be north-north-west which is slightly side-off-shore, but often wraps around a little more to become NW which is perfectly side-shore.

WAVES
Is this a nice rigging area, or what!?!

The rigging area at Sugar Beach resort is superb! A beautiful grassy area just feet from the launch site. A windsurfer's dream, rigging right in front of your house. We have secure, individual, board racks at the side of the building. You can store your equipment there whether you will be rigging a Sugar Beach or elsewhere.

Launch and sail west, in front of Speed Beach, and enjoy high wind flat water sailing like you’ve never seen before. If you are more into wave sailing, you can sail a little ways downwind to the pavilion, known to the locals as Ohukai. When we are getting a south swell, as we often do in the summer, waves break over the reef there. Even without much of a swell, there are usually great ramps for jumping.

On days that the north shore is your choice for sailing, you are conveniently located in the area on the south shore that is closest to the north shore. 15 minutes from Sugar Beach to Kanaha Beach Park, probably the most popular launch in the world!
