Completed around 1869 as the only way to take heavy goods across the barrier of the Blue Mountains. By 1907 the traffic was so great that it could not cope and the present series of 10 tunnels took over after completion in 1910. during the recent fires, the "Zig Zag Railway" suffered great losses to much of the timber buildings, because the reconstruction is by volunteer workers the cost of the loss can not be calculated or covered by insurance. You will agree though that these people have put in a grand effort to keep this piece of Australian History alive. My thanks to the volunteers at the
"Great Lithgow Zig Zag Railway."
The staff take time to stop and show you the area, the view changes with the seasons.
Steam is used at weekends. During the week and when an extreme fire hazard exists the restored railcars are used.
