Completed around 1869 as the only way to take heavy goods across the barrier of the Blue Mountains. By 1907 the traffic was so great that it could not cope and the present series of 10 tunnels took over after completion in 1910. during the recent fires, the "Zig Zag Railway" suffered great losses to much of the timber buildings, because the reconstruction is by volunteer workers the cost of the loss can not be calculated or covered by insurance.
