Whack, lick, and look.
This is the trip that probably got me interested in hiking in my adult life,
or perhaps I took it because I was becoming interested in hiking. I decided
to take 12 credits, a driver discount (due to my chauffeur's licence) and head
out with the U of M Geology Department to Camp Davis in Wyoming for
"Introduction to Geology in the Rocky Mountains." We spent about 6 1/2 weeks
examining rocks and rock formations in 4 states, and lived in tents while on
the road, and tin cabins while at camp. The food was fantastic, very little
face and leg shaving was done, and the popular evening pasttimes were bat
watching, deer spotting, admiring the Perciads (sp?), and listening to the
coyotes. The pictures below include one of our camp in the middle of the
desert, when one of the vans broke down near Topaz Mountain, where, believe
it or not, clear sun-bleached topaz sat in all the river beds waiting to be
picked up. The second is of Cream-Puff... the tallest peak in walking distance
from Camp Davis. The book at the top had signatures dating back to the 1930's.
My favorite entry was a whole page with the words 'Scuze me, while I kiss
the sky!'
