Welcome to the
Charlotte Harbor Fishing Report! The weather has been
fantastic, the tides high, and the water is clear and
warm. Snook, Redfish, and Spotted Trout are larger
and more plentiful. Artificial baits still win the
day for most species with a better "live release"
ratio than live bait. Come on out and join the
fishing fun!!!

WARNING ** WARNING ** |
Below are some things you should know before launching your boat in Charlotte Harbor.
Charlotte harbor is
salt water, which means after loading your boat back
on the trailer the WORK begins. To protect your
equipment from saltwater corrosion you must wash it
all down with fresh water, soap and elbow grease.
Flush your motor with fresh water inside and out.
Attach a motor flusher unit and garden hose and run
the motor a good five minutes to flush the cooling
system. Wash the trailer thoroughly, top, bottom,
sides, springs, brakes, wheels,..I think you get the
picture. Clean your fishing reels and rods and apply
light oil to your reels. If you do not properly clean
all your equipment you will be very dissappointed in
a few weeks or months. With out proper cleaning your
trailer will rust away within a couple years.
If I had known these rules before I fished saltwater
I would not be on my second trailer already. It is
Aluminum now.
The second thing you should know is Charlotte Harbor has plenty of sandbars and oysterbars. Lots of areas with water too shallow for your boat. You MUST know where they are to avoid being hung up or worse yet being injured or damaging your boat. Stop at a marina or tackle shop for a navigational map and look it over before you launch. Many a boater has been stuck on a sandbar because he sees what looks like open water ahead not knowing it is only inches deep. If you see a bird on the water ahead DO NOT assume it is a floating bird. It may be standing in 12" or less of water. REMEMBER** the tides vary the water depth and so does the wind. Wind can make a high tide a lot lower than you may realize, and your location in the Harbor can make a difference depending on wind direction and strength. For more information on tides please visit Harbor Tides an excellent source of information.
Make sure you have a VHF marine radio or at least a cellular phone for emergency use. You never know when you may need it. Charlotte Harbor is a large body of water with some areas having thousands of mangrove islands to get lost in. A good GPS unit could be a life saver if you are lost. Make sure you link to satelites for the area you are in.
