Tanatoraja is a high mountainouns area with beautiful scenery and a fascinating culture. The traditional houses are shaped like buffaloe horns with the roof rearing up at front and rear. The houses are remarkably similar to the Batak houses of lake Toba in Sumatra and are always aligned north-south. |

| The Toraja believe you can take possesions with you and the dead generally go well equipped to their graves. Since this led to grave plundering, the Toraja started to hide their dead in caves or hew niches out of rock faces. |

The burial customs of the Toraja are unique- they usually have two funerals- one immediately after the death and then an elaborate second funeral after sufficient time has elapsed to make the complex preparations and raise the necessary cash. The more important the deceased, the more buffalo that must be sacrificed. |
