Myanmar (formely known as Burma) is one of the largest countries in South-East Asia, stretching over 2,000 km from north to south. It is twice the size of Vietnam, and Myanmar is bigger than England and France combined. Ethnically diverse, Myanmar is a nation of many races- some 130 ethnic groups make up its population of nearly 45 million. The majority of Myanmar's people are bamars (from which the British coined Burma), but the Shan, Kachin, Kayin, Mon, Karen, Rakhine, and others are also prominent throughout the country.
Even if it's still not possible to visit the entire country, there a still a lot of sights to keep you busy for your whole trip, the Schwedagon Paya in Yangon, the ancient royal capitals and the former colonial hill-station of Pyu U Lwin next to Mandalay, the wonderful temples of Bagan, the strange Mt Popa, without forgetting the friendly Burmese people and the numerous monks in their saffron robes who give the atmosphere such serenity.
