Les Trois
Vallées is one of the largest skiable
expanses in the world. Hundreds of pistes and ski
lifts are set in three spectacular valleys in the
Tarentaise area of the French Alps. I was lucky
enough to go there for a week in February 2000. The
snow was fantastic and the scenery beautiful. It
was a great place to learn to ski. The snow-coated
fir trees are great, the village atmosphere is
quaint and nice, though there are a few too many
Brits. Courchevel is the valley over from
Méribel, the middle valley which I was in. I
stayed in Méribel village, 2km from the main
Méribel centre at La Chaudanne. There was a
great indoor swimming pool and ice-skating rink
too. While I was there there was a day when it was
-5 degrees at the bottom (1400m) and -18 degrees on
top of the mountain.
