Women may have pain during sexual intercourse, lower abdominal pain, change in bleeding pattern. Men may have watery or thick discharge from the penis, pain when urinating.

Can I get cured?

Yes - You will need to take antibiotic tablets for 10 days. If you take them all, the chlamydia will go away. You should not drink alcohol or have unprotected sex while you are on the tablets. You will need to see the doctor/nurse after you have finished the tablets to make sure the chlamydia has gone. These tablets affect the birth control pill. Ask the doctor/nurse what to do.

What if I forget to take the tablets?

Take them as soon as you remember. If you do not take all the tablets you may not get better.

What if I don’t get treated?

Chlamydia does not go away by itself but spreads deeper into the body. If you are a woman, you may get pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). This means that you may become infertile. You will usually know that you have this because you will get stomach (belly) ache and it will hurt to have sex. BUT a lot of PID is "silent" and you will only find out that you have had it if you want to have a baby and can’t get pregnant. If you are a man the infection may spread to your testicles (balls) which will be very painful. It can also make you infertile.

Does my partner need treating?

Yes - If your partner is not treated, you will get the infection back when you have sex again.

You will get re-infected if you have sex without using a condom. Ask your doctor/nurse to talk to your partner to explain the importance of taking the tablets.

Will we have to use condoms all the time now?

No, not if you both get treated and do not have sex until you have finished ALL the tablets. If you have a new partner, you should use condoms until both of you have had a sexual health check.

What if I get chlamydia when I’m pregnant?

You must get treated. If you do not your baby may get infected when it is being born. Babies get a "sticky" eye or very bad chest infection.

You need different tablets. You must tell the doctor that you are pregnant and you will be given different tablets. You will also need these special tablets if you are breastfeeding your baby.
