After we visited the colony of flamingos we drove right through the Namib Desert to the campsite Weltevree near the Sossusvlei.
The Namib Desert is a deserted plain. You can look for
tens of kilometres and it's very dry. Still you hear birds
singing and after 50 km an ostrich passed by: there must be water
somewhere. The roads are moderate. The first picture shows a
sandy deserted plain. The oilbarrel in the distance was once a
roadmark. People drove from barrel to barrel. Sometimes you see a
lot of trees in line along a (dry) riverbank.
The next two pictures I took by Solitaire. The village
is credit to its name: there was one house, which was also a
shop, a bakery (very nice bread), a restaurant, a camping, a
filling station, a church etc. Solitaire is build next to a
crossing of roads so people and trucks come by every day.
There was no electricity so they pumped the gas by hand!!
