Country Chateau

The Cotentin Peninsula in the northwest, is famous for horse breeding and dairy farming. The area between Bayeux and the coast is also known for its handsome graystone farmhouses. The area south of the Bessin is most renowned for its dairy farming and cider that comes from the apple trees. East of Caen, in the Pays d'Auge and Calvados (known for apple brandy), are more orchards and half-timbered farms and old barns. The dairy farms of Pays d'Auge provide the milk used to produce the famous cheeses o f this region - camembert, livarot, and pont l'efeque. South of the plains around Caen, near Falaise, Flers, and Clecy are dramatic gorges. Le Havre, Dieppe, and Rouen, are bordered on the Channel by the great white chalk cliffs which plunge in to the ocean.
