Another
staple land, Frontierland is home to many fantastic attractions
and shows. Between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Fantasmic!,
Billy Hill and the Hillbillies and Tom Sawyer Island, count on
spending a while here. But it's all worth it, so "hold on to
those hats and glasses, cuz this here's the wildest ride in the
wilderness!"
Attractions
Big Thunder Mountain
Railroad
A rip-roarin' runaway mine
train ride through some quaky caverns and some cool effects.
There are two tracks: left & right (Like The Matterhorn
Bobsleds). My opinion is that the left side is way better. The
ride is long and tame, but it's very relaxing. When you see the
goat holding dynamite in its mouth, turn your head and keep your
head totally focused on it as long as it is in sight. You'll get
a weird experience (known by the A.D.D.ers as The Goat Trick).
USUAL WAIT: 5-15 minutes at peak times
Tom Sawyer Island
I guess I should mention
that you can't get to Tom Sawyer Island without taking a raft
from near The Hungry Bear in Critter Country, but I won't.
(oxymoron alert) The island is full of mysterious caves, mills,
and a treehouse. It's a lot of fun and it's an easy way to lose
your kids. DON'T EVER LEAVE YOUR KIDS ALONE ON THE ISLAND.
Always, either be with them, or at least on the island. It's
always fun to stand on the Fantasmic! stage at the front of the
Island and look at the 20' X 20' trap door that the
fire-breathing dragon comes out of. Note: In the coming years,
this Island may give way to any number of new rides. Nobody's
sure right now.
USUAL WAIT: 5 minutes at peak times
Frontierland Shootin'
Exposition
Fer fifty cents ya can
fire inf-ah-red laser rifles at interractive targits fer awhile.
Lokat'd next to the Casa Mehicana vittle hole.
USUAL WAIT: None
The Sailing Ship
Columbia
A Disneyland staple for
many years, here you board a gorgeous ship and sail on the Rivers
of America. Unfortuneately, last Christmas Eve this ride was the
site of sad disaster. The ride is now perfectly safe and
perfectly fun and a great way to take the gorgeous scenery of
this part of the Park. Watch in Fantasmic! for the Columbia's
cameo appearance!
USUAL WAIT: 5-25 minutes at peak times
The Mark Twain Riverboat
Another Disneyland staple,
it follows the same path as the Columbia, but it's a little more
relaxing and shaded. And it's a real steamboat! Also, in
Fantasmic! watch for an appearance from the Mark Twain.
USUAL WAIT: 5-25 minutes at peak times
Live Shows!
Fantasmic!
Ready for a show that is
different than anything else you've ever seen? A show so
beautiful and so breathtaking that it makes the long and hard day
trudging around totally worth it? Well, here it is. Fantasmic! A
nighttime spectacular unlike any other. Mickey Mouse is your
guide, and his imagination comes to life on Tom Sawyer Island and
the Rivers of America...but soon, Disney's evillest villains take
over and turn his beautiful dreams into frightening nightmares.
At the final standoff between Mickey and Maleficent (in the form
of a 45 ft. tall fire breathing dragon), Mickey declares,
"You may think you're so powerful! Well, uh...but this is my
dream!" And with his sword he defeats The Wicked Queen,
Ursula, Chernabog, and Maleficent in one fell swoop. In the
indescribable finale, Steamboat Willie Mickey appears and pilots
the riverboat and onboard, Disney princesses, the seven dwarfs,
Mary Poppins, Tarzan & Jane, Chip & Dale, Goofy, Pluto,
Donald, Daisy, Minnie and many more characters join Mickey in a
celebration. When the Mark Twain sails into the darkness,
Sorcerer Mickey appears at the top of the island and directs
fireworks, lasers, and fountains as they careen across the sky.
And then, just as subtly as it started, Mickey appears in his
regular tux on the stage and laughs to the audience, "Some
imagination, huh?", and in a flash, it's over.
USUAL WAIT: For the 9pm show, to get a good
seat, you MUST arrive on or before 8:30. For the 10:30pm show, a
good seat can be secured from 10-10:15pm. See Fantasmic! for more details.
The Golden Horseshoe
Saloon
While normally the Saloon
is host to two different shows (which play on alternating days),
to promote Toy Story 2, currently "The All-New Woody's
Roundup" takes the stage daily. Supposedly, you're attending
a taping of the newest episode of the TV show, "Woody's
Roundup". Mr. Eversmooth, your announcer, and Tex, a cowboy,
accompany Woody, Jessie and Bullseye on a whimsical journey. It's
a lot of fun, and there's lots of songs, but it's for kids. In
order to enjoy this corny show, you have to become a kid
again....not too hard. All in all, it's a lot of fun and worth
going to.
USUAL WAIT: Line can form as early as 20
minutes before showtime, so be sure to get there early to reserve
a spot.
Billy Hill & The
Hillbillies
Characters!
Not many characters call Frontierland home, but every once in awhile, the Brer critters are spotted, and cowboy Goofy, Chip and Dale have made appearances. Keep those eyes wide open!
