Hello, and join me on a
diesel-hopping trip in Southern India. And while we are at it, meet the Indian Railways
latest workhorses, the huge GT Mac WDG/4 and the WDP2. These pics are arranged in no specific order: they are just as random as I was in shooting them. Enjoy! |

1. Say hello to the IR's latest workhorse, the massive GTMac WDG/4, seen here heading a massive freight on a very cloudy afternoon at Londa. The WDG/4s are under extensive trials on the Braganza Ghat line between Londa and Vasco, where one or at the most a pair will replace three or more WDM/2s. The first batch has already come in from the US: these machines will soon be built in India. |
2. We encounter an unknown passenger train at a level crossing between Miraj and Londa. The WDM/2A in charge is from the Poona (Pune) diesel shed, as seef from the shed markings on the face of the long hood. |
3. A WDM/2A from the Guntakal shed in the typical orange/blue livery of that shed. Shot from my train 7085 up at Kacheguda in Hyderabad, the engine is in charge of the Kurnool Town bound Tungabhadra Express, and awaits the starter signal for its departure. |
4.Typical control stand of a standard WDM/2 diesel unit of the IR.The control levers for the train and brake are absent, having been used on the other side where the driver sat. |
5. Yours faithfully posing in the cab of the diesel referred to above. |
6. Just before disembarking from the engine: a group photograph with the kind driver who let us in and allowed us to bet a feel of the controls of the mighty diesel. At the extreme left is my cousin, who was as excited as I was. |
7.Just before bidding adieu to the driver, another shot in front of the great beast. This engine actually hauled our train after finishing a round of switching duties. |
8.A BCNA load headed by a double WDG/2 combo somewhere near Londa on the SCR. |
9. The same train as it passes the photographer. Note that the two diesels are coupled long hood to long hood to afford good visibility to the drivers in either direction. |
10. This sparkling, bright WDP2 waits to get coupled to the rakes of the Trichy bound Pallavan express on a pleasant morning at Chennai Egmore. Note the livery, not the usual GOC kind of livery but definitely gives it some macho looks . |
11. This WDP2 has just finished a quick, good run from Chennai and reached on time at Madurai Junction . |
12. The ever reliable workhorse of IR, 2 WDM2As seen coupled together, hauling a BCNA rake out of Tirunelveli towards Madurai. Though the lead loco has short-hood leading the second one is coupled to the lead on its short hood side. |
13. Layout of tracks around the Sec'bad-Hyd region. this is just a rough sketch |
Thats all from me for the moment. Stay tuned for more additions to this page.
