We the undersigned, citizens of the United States, with understanding that our nations laws are by the people, for the people,and of the people, hereby denounce the Death Penalty Laws and require that our voices be heard through the legistlative efforts to abolish such laws, in favor of life in prison and/or other alternatives. We ask this of you in the name of morality and humanity;
Whereas, The United Nations Commission on Human Rights adopted a resolution on April 3, 1997 on the abolition of the death penalty, making the death penalty law a human rights concern,
Whereas, millions of dollars are wasted on pursuing the execution of individual defendants when the money can be more effectively used in long-term crime reduction, such as more law enforcement officers and socialization and rehabilitation programs.
Whereas, since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976, the support for the death penalty has dropped to the lowest percentages (30 %) since 1966 when alternative sentences were offered as a choice.
Whereas, the United States is one of the few remaining nations supporting the death penalty.
Whereas, many capital crime defendants are denied their Fifth Amendment rights under the Bill of Rights because officials are quick to answer with the death penalty.
Whereas, the American Bar Association has called for a moratorium on the death penalty because of the unfairness of its application.
We, the undersigned, support legislation that will stop the death penalty and favor other alternatives.
