West Essex Junior High School Spanish 9 Students 1996

Project Goals

The Internet Project was designed to have students:

• become familiar with the World Wide Web, and the Resources available about, and for speakers of Spanish .
• surf the Web and identify sites that they believe would be useful for Spanish students, at West Essex, or others with access to the Web.
• review and select sites that could be included in a Spanish Department Home Page.

Project Procedures

• Students worked together in self selected groups of up to four students. Each group was composed of at least one or two students who had previous experience on the Internet and access to the World Wide Web at home. Internet access was available to the students in the Media Center, and in Mrs. Konner's classroom, during study periods and after school.
• Mrs. Barbara Longo, the West Essex Junior High School librarian, was an invaluable resource to all students. Without her patience and assistance, students could not have completed their projects!!
• The following is a copy of the Internet Project guidelines distributed to all students in Spanish 9 & Spanish 1 classes:

The World Languages Department would like to create a Home Page on the Internet that students can access in school and from home. Students are to work collaboratively, in groups of up to four, to review selected Web sites, and to identify Web sites that may be useful in the study of Spanish.

Project Part I - Students are to conduct a search of web sites from the topic listed below.(1 country per team)

Some of the LINKS we would like to include should contain information about:
1) Culture, Geography , History, Embassies, or Consulates of
Hispanic Countries.

2) Information on Travel: Airlines, Hotels, Events, Restaurants, Sights to See, to the following

Countries:

• Argentina
• Bolivia
• Chile
• Colombia
• Costa Rica
• Cuba
• Dominican Republic
• Ecuador
• El Salvador
• Guatemala
• Honduras
• Mexico
• Nicaragua
• Panama
• Paraguay
• Peru
• Puerto Rico
• Spain
• Uruguay
• Venezuela

Project Part II - Students are to conduct a search of Web sites for one of the topics listed below.(1 per team)

Suggestions:

Discuss how your group would like to complete your assigned work. You may divide up the work, complete it all together, or work in pairs. It is your decision as a group to determine the process you will use. Each team member must participate, and indicate on the project form provided who was responsible for identifying and reviewing each site.

Do a Web search to find listings of Web Sites and their URLs for your assigned topics for Parts I & II by using a search engine. Metacrawler, Yahoo, Excite, Magellan, Alta Vista, are some search engines to try. Review sites generated by completing your search.

Visit the sites that you believe to be the most promising. Carefully record the Web Site URL (address) on the form provided for each site you believe to be useful. Review the sites with your teammates and include your final team recommendations on the project forms provided.

Project Part III - Web Search of pre-identified Web Sites

Review list of Web Sites provided to you. (20 per team)

• ·Print the name of each Web Site
• ·Write a comment describing what can be found on each Home Page
• ·Indicate if you would recommend including this site on the West Essex Home Page
• ·Print out a copy of the first page only of each Home Page you recommend (include the site URL [select in page set-up] when you print)

Final Project - Due on or before May 20, 1996

• Include a title page listing your search topics and the names of the students on your search team.
• Complete and hand in the forms provided with your "finds".
• Include copies of the first page for each Web Site you recommend to be included on the West Essex Home Page.
• Make sure you have included the name of the site and the URL!
