Volcano of Capelinhos 1 - Faial Island - The eruption of 57/58

That is the small islanders' of Capelinhos aspect before the eruption happened in the autumn of 1957 in the middle of sea

The eruption that lasted several months left many damages for every island, tends the ashes besides arrived to islands neighboring Pico and São Jorge.

A lot of houses were buried and totally destroyed.

Of the 30 thousand inhabitants of the island at that time, almost that 17 thousand left the island.

This is the church of the freguesia of the Praia do Norte, freguesia where no house was saved...
