IDEAS FOR SHORT TALKS AND SKETCHES (RANDOM)

SINS

4 sketches involving typical sins:

e.g.       anger - 2 people watching different TV channels – conflict and pushing

            greed - chocolates / scoffing / sick!

jealousy - boy / girl type sketch

selfishness - playing and not letting another join iin

ASK CHILDREN WHAT SINS ARE

Sins could be written on paper and pinned up or written on balloons. The paper or balloons can act as a barrier to God. Someone tries to get to God through the barrier, its impossible, person becomes upset. How is it possible to reach God?

Enter JC who enters the world perfect. Man becomes angry with this perfect man and puts him on the cross with all sins on him. JC dies  - bursts balloons or rips up paper or burns it - then hugs person who was trying to get to God.

CRUCIFIXION

A wooden cross is needed - act out death of Jesus, mocking, stripping, whipping, carrying cross, nailing, breathing difficulties etc.

DO NOT TOUCH

A chair with a sign saying ‘Do not touch’ - someone comes along, sees it laughs and toys with the chair and almost but doesn’t touch it. Laughing all the time. He then accidentally touches sit and gets stuck to it. Tries to free himself and fails. Other parts of him get stuck in his attempts to free himself.

Person 2 does same and also ends up stuck, then person 3.

Finally a christian comes along and prays and gradually each one becomes unstuck. The back of the chair has a sign saying SIN which is then revealed to the audience.

JESUS CHRIST THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Magic candle - light never goes out - Jesus is with us always

CREATION

Use a large condensed poster which is unfurled a piece at a time as the themes of creation are disclosed.

Sketch of Adam and Eve’s part of the story showing Adam’s loneliness before and satisfaction after creation of Eve.

WORLD

Man and God on opposite sides of ravine, man hanging off the cliff side in attempt to get to God, cross bridges the gap.

LOVE

Put water in a jar half full and ask how much love does God have for us? Go on to ¾ full and then fill the jar to indicate the amount of love - punch line is to have a bowl under the jar and say that the jar is continuously full of God’s love and pouring over into the bowl. (Running over?)

Gift of love

Put out a banquet - with an invitation to come but YOU must choose to accept it.

Holy Spirit            use a puppet, lifeless until a hand empowers it.

Service                        wash some feet!

Faith                Blindfold a volunteer and ask if he/she has faith from behind person. Ask them to fall back into your arms. Repeat but do from in front of volunteer (having placed another leader behind in secret!)

Armour of God     Get a volunteer to dress up in a toga, shield, breast plate, shoes helmet belt and sword (e.g. blanket, pan lid, tray etc)

When discussing shield fire water at volunteer from a water pistol!

Holy Spirit empowering us to love one another

Sketch - man at bench reading newspaper - 2 others join him but ignore him despite his attempts to get involved. Another person joins and also ignores first man. They then leave and the first man falls off the bench.            Point? Holy spirit is needed for all to get along?

The knock-on effect of sin

Glass of water - one small drop of ink eventually colours the whole glass. A small wooden cross (and a sterilising tablet) will remove the colour if stirred into the beaker of sin water. The cross take sup our sin.

Prodigal son

Act out this incredibly important story illustrating God’s forgiveness.

Reality dramas            Act out what it was like being a witness to any important event in Jesus life - to bring out relevance of story more clearly.

Resurrection promise

Get children to put 1 flower each into a wire mesh which surrounds a wooden cross as a symbol of new life.

Jesus becomes sin for us

Bowl of gunge in which is buried some treasure (money in a plastic bag) Ask for volunteers to reach in and collect it. A leader acting as JC does it and brings good out at end   ?

Jesus take our place on the cross

Plate of foam - volunteer asked 3 questions. If any of the 3 answered wrongly gets the foam in his face, If correct goes in the leaders face. Make sure he gets one wrong! You are about to put the foam in his face when someone from the audience volunteers to take the punishment for him. (like Jesus)
