GETTING TO NEW YORK CITY

ORIENTATION.
New York City is located on the northeast coast of the United States. Positioned at the southern tip of the state of New York, is it surronded by Connecticut, New Jersey, and Long Island, New York. The buroughs of Manhattan, lie within the state of New York. Over one-half-dozen interstate highways converge on the several bridges that cross into the city of New York.

From the west & south, Interstate 80 and several New Jersey state highways converge onto the Holland Tunnel near Hoboken, NJ. This toll tunnel will lead traffic into southern Manhattan unto Canal Street.

Right-Click for full image • Interstate 495 and NJ Highway 3 as well as local traffic enter Manhattan via the Holland Tunnel in Union City, NJ. This traffic will enter into the heart of Midtown.

Right Click for full image • Further north, Interstate 95 and NJ Highway's 1,9.46, & 4 come together jointly to cross the Hudson River on the George Washington Bridge. This bridge dumps traffic into the northern tip of Manhattan Island and continues west into the Bronx. This throughway is recommended for all traffic moving from New Jersey and points eastward onto Long Island or into Connecticut or the Bronx. This will avoid delays in Manhattan.

From the north, Interstate 87 enters the vicinity on the Major Deegan Expressway through the Bronx, it offers access to Manhattan at the Tri-Burough Bridge (to the south) and the George Washington Bridge (conjuction of I-95).

Right Click for full image • Interstate 95 follows a path from Connecticut through the Bronx, and across the George Washington bridge into Manhattan. It allows access to Long Island and eastern NYC Buroughs via the Interstate 295 and the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge & the Throgs Neck Bridge.

• Some 50 small highways and parkways come into the Bronx from Connecticut, Pelham Bay area, and Westchester County. The above highways offer direct access to Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn.

From Long Island (east), some three dozen highways and roads criss-cross Long Island east of NYC. A few major highways control traffic about the Buroughs and into Manhattan. The Cross Island Parkway starts as traffic enters L.I. from the Bronx on I-295 and goes eastward. The Long Island Expressway brings a majority of traffic westbound into Manhattan, also Interstate 495, this multi-line highway starts in Manhattan at the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, and will continue eastward across all of Queens. Perpendicular to this major artery is the Van Wyck Expressway (I-678), that travels north-south from LaGuardia Airport to J.F.K. Airport on Long Island. The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway starts south of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel in Brooklyn, and feeds northward through Brooklyn to the Grand Central Parkway in northern Queens. This is ideal for Brooklynites needing access to Manhattan, via a choice of three bridges and a tunnel. The Williamsburg, Brooklyn, & Manhattan Bridges all intersec the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway from Manhattan.

By Bus. Bus service includes Carey Transportation Inc. buses (718/632.0500, 800/284-0909), which depart JFK every 30 minutes (sometimes more frequently) from 6AM to midnight ($13).JFKmap All buses drop off and pick up at Grand Central Terminal (Park Avenue @East 41st St), a number of principal Midtown Hotels, and Port Authority Bus Terminal. Buses also depart to and from Queens (Long Island Railroad Jamaica Station) every 30 minutes (5.30AM - 11PM) and to and from Brooklyn (scheduled stops include Pierpont Plaza and at Williamsburg Savings Bank) every two hours (8.30AM to 8.30PM). The last departure from Grand Central to JFK is 1AM. Travel time is about an hour but allow extra time for the hotel-stopping route.

Gray Line Air Shuttle Buses (315.3006) run to and from the airport to nearly 50 hotels on the East and West side between 23rd Street and 63rd Street, in Manhattan every 15 minutes from 7AM to 11PM, and hourly from Manhattan to the airports ($16). Travel time is about an hour, though its hotel stops are time-consuming.

By Car. The most direct way into and out of Manhattan is by car. From the airport, take the Van Wyck Expressway to the Grand Central Parkway, (GCP), which connects with the Long Island Expressway, (LIE). Those going to downtown Manhattan (or to Brooklyn) should exit the LIE onto the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, (BQE). The BQE, in turn, head s into the Williamsburg, Manhattan & Brooklyn Bridges. For midtown destinations, continue on the LIE, which connects to the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.

Not all taxis will want to make the trip back to Manhattan or vice versa (and should never ask you to compensate for their return trip into town), so allow yourself some time to find one so inclined. See limousine services to reserve private car service for the same price, or less.

By Subway. This is the cheapest, and maybe the longest, way to get into Manhattan; you'll need to catch a free shuttle bus marked Howard Beach Station, where you'll connect with the A train ($1.50) subway, making stops along Eighth Avenue at West 59th, West 42nd, and West 34th Streets - with opportunity to connect to other lines.
