A look at the Nightlife in the Big Apple

Unlike any city in the world, New York takes the prize for the wildest, and most eventful nightlife. The City that Never Sleeps was coined as a phrase to describe New York, and for obvious reasons. New York has thousands of things to do once the sun sets over the beautiful skyline of Manhattan.

Manhattan in general is home to over 5,000 bars, pubs and hang-outs in which to enjoy company of friends and enjoy life. Over 500 nighclubs call Manhattan home. In addition to the clubs and bars, New York is probably most famous for its Broadway shows - which primarily run at night. Its Theater District, in Midtown, is filled with tuxedo wearing and formal looking couples heading from dinner to the show in the late evening.
Besides the traditional activities, among the best things to do at night in New York include a sightseeing trip to the top of the Empire State Building, which is open until midnight. Sightseeing cruises run nightly from many ports taking you around Manhattan, for a quiet, beautiful look at the city.

The most prodomenent location for the music venues and bars/pubs is downtown, south of 14th Street. Some of these bars and nightclubs are open until 4am. In Greenwich Village & Soho, one can stroll along the streets venturing into the many quaint shops that offer a different look into the culture of the city of New York.

The New York Press and the Village Voice are free magazines, available throughout the city. These newspapers give up-to-date and detailed information about the happenings and events, including music venues and bar hours.
Its easy to hop around the city late at night, the subway is open 24 hours and will accomidate any nightlife schedule; as will the Taxi service - which costs a little extra 8pm-6am.
