STAYING ON the UPPER WEST SIDE including Morningside & Washington Heights, and Columbia University
Opposite Central Park, and the East Side, lies the wealthy homes and businesses of the West Side. Within 59th & 86th Streets lie some of the most extraordinarly highrise apartments, Fordham University, Lincoln Center, and the American Museum of Natural History. If you need to stay close to the park, or these outstanding attractions; or you want to escape the traffic of Midtown without losing the 'class' of Manhattan, stay on the West Side:
15 Central Park West (at W. 61st Street) A stones-throw from Lincoln Center, this hotel offers 377 roomy accomodations, all with color TVs and most with serving pantries. Renovations have brought a new fitness center, a top-notch restaurant which plays live classical music.
44 West 63rd St (between Broadway & Columbus) In the early 1990's, a $70-million renovation brought each of the 375 rooms to modern tastes. CD players, VCRs, two-line telephones, and well-stocked rooms are a few of the amenities. The New West 63rd St Steakhouse, and the nearby Lincoln Center are two reasons why the Radisson is a good bet.
5 West 63rd St. (between Central Park W. & Broadway) Almost devastated for a mall in 1966, the YMCA has been in this spot since 1930. The hostelry offers 550 single and double rooms to both men and women. In addition to a popular sports/fitness center, it has a family and youth services department.
242 West 76th St (at Broadway) Handsome prewar apartments abound in this area, and the Milbun was one of them until a multi-million dollar renovation converted it to a gracious 70-suite hotel. All these suites are furnished with kitchens and microwaves, making this hotel a good place for families or long-term visitors.
45 West 81st St (between Central Park W & Colmbus Ave) On a ritzy block near the American Museum of Natural History, this hotel is classy - on a budget. The majority of the 150 guestquarters are one-bedroom suites.
