The 1900 Union League World's Championship Series |

This year's pennant winners, the New York Highlanders from the Players League, and the Federal League's Troy Haymakers, took totally divergent routes to this year's WCS. The Highlanders had to battle to the very last day to secure the pennant from the hard charging Beaneaters of Boston (the defending Champs), while the Troy Nine had things wrapped up before September even had started! The Troy steamroller rolled to 101 wins during the regular season, 1 shy of Ansonia's (now the Highlanders) league record. Of course, Ansonia had the benefit of playing a 162 game sked, so a case can be made for these Haymakers to be the best team ever to take a Union league field. They were led, indeed carried, by the fearsome 1-2 pitching combination of Federal League MVP and Pitcher Of the Year Kid Nichols and Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown. The Kid racked up 32 W's, only the third pitcher to reach the big 3-0 (Troy manager Al Spalding and Old Hoss Radbourne are the others, both in 1877), and Brown lead both leagues with a sparkling 1.63 ERA, a league record. As dominant as the pitching was, the offense was just enough to get the job done and no more. Troy manager Albert J. Spalding, without a big bat to count on, kept the Troy attack afloat with the bunt and Hit & Run. The Troy ball club depended on fundamental inside base ball to reach the series.
The Highlanders, on the other hand, made it this far by supporting their staff, which was 2nd in the league in ERA, by scoring more runs than anyone else in both leagues. The Players League MVP and team captain Honus Wagner, obtained in a preseason trade with the Cincinnati Outlaw Reds, and old hand Hugh Duffy were the centerpeices of the New York attack. Wagner led the legue in batting average and homeruns, while Duffy copped the RBI title with 110 - the only man to top the century mark this year. Babe Adams with 22 wins and Doc White with 17 led a solid staff, which was bolstered by mid-season acquistion "Happy Jack" Chesbro, who was 8-4 with New York.
The series opened in Troy, and it quickly became apparent that this would be a low scoring affair. Both Adams and Nichols were on their games early, with Troy managing a single run in the 4th when Big Dan McGann doubled in Doc Gessler. That score held until the 7th, when New York knotted thing up using a similar recipe when Buck Herzog singled in Kip Selbach, who had lofted a 1 out double to the gap in left. The next inning New York again got a runner to second via an extra base hit when Amos Strunk doubled into right. Hugh Duffy did the honors and singled in the go ahead run. Troy wasn't done, however, as Doc Gessler greeted Babe Adams with a booming double to lead off the ninth. New York manager "Orator Jim" O'Rourke then called in lefty Bill Burns to face switch hitters Dan McGann and Jimmy Austin. McGann surprised the New Yorkers as the Haymakers cleanup batter bunted Gessler to third, but when Austin was dispatched, Spalding called on "Mean Gene" Demontreville and his clutch bat to finish the job. O'Rourke didn't like the matchup though, and brought in Elmer Steele to close it out. Steele did just that, as he got Demontreville on a fly out to center to end the game as New York drew first blood with the upset win.
Game Two looked to be another tough one, but New York got their bats going and early and scored a pair of runs in the second off Troy starter Three Finger Brown, by virtue of a pair of singles, a hit batsman (1 of 3 on the day by Troy pitchers - maybe they were sending a message?) and a neat squeeze play carried out by NY starter Doc White. The Highlanders added a run in the 4th on another pretty bunt by White which followed consceutive singles by Buck Herzog and John Warner. 3-0 NY. Was this possible? Would New York actually sweep the first two games from Troy in their own backyard? Well, Troy answered in the 5th as they scored using the bunted ball as well. Demontreville singled and was advanced to second by third sacker Harry Steinfeldt's sacrifice. Catcher Jimmy Archer then knocked Mean Gene in with a sharp single up the middle, past a diving Miller Huggins. Bobby Wallace then bunted Archer over, and Spalding called on Bruno block to pinch hit for Brown. But Bruno swung and missed on a 2 out hit & run play as Wallace was caught easily at second by Warner's throw. 3-1 NY.
Troy got closer in the bottom of the 6th, when Fred Snodgrass popped a one out homer to left that just made it over the wall! In fact, New York left fielder Hugh Duffy claimed that the 12 year old fan who leaned over the wall to catch the ball actually took it away from him. No matter, Umpire Ad Gumbert signalled "Homerun", and that made it 3-2, NY. Troy wasted no time in tying things up the next inning, as Hi Myers, who hit .305 during the season, slapped a basehit to left, stole second and then scored on a Demontreville single. Troy proceeded to load the bases, but NY escaped further damage when Doc Reisling came in to get pinch hitter Ham Hyatt on a fly ball to left to end the frame. Spalding then called in George Winter from his depleted pen, leaving only Kid Nichols out there by his lonesome. Winter was up to the task however, as the he kept the suddenly silent New York bats in check. Things proceeded in an orderly fashion into extra innings, as neither team mounted much of a threat. Winter was mowing down the New Yorkers, and a parade of NY pitchers held the Haymakers in check as well.
The Highlanders finally broke through in the top of the 13th, when Hugh Duffy and Kip Selbach laced back to back singles to start things off. First sacker Amos Strunk then bunted them over for Buck Herzog, who completed things with a sac fly to left, scoring Duffy. When John Warner worked a walk off the tiring Winter, Troy went to the Big Man, and Kid Nichols responded by getting pinchhitter Patsy Tebeau on a harmless fly ball. But the damage was done. O'Rourke called in Steele, who saved game one, and he responded by issuing a lead off walk to McGann. Steele bounced back to get Fred Odwell and the always dangerous Edwin Harvey, leaving things to Jim Austin. It was "Deja Vu all over again" as Austin swung through the pitch on a Hit & Run leaving pinchrunner Charley O'Leary to be nailed on a close play at second to end the game! New York had prevailed, taking a pair of one run games from the Haymakers on the road. That puts Troy in a tough spot, down two games to none as we head to New York, New York - where the Highlanders' rabid fans lie in wait!
As the series moved to New York, the Haymakers knew they had to stem the momentum New York had built up by winning those first two contests in Troy. So they put the call out to The Kid to play Stopper. New York went with "Happy Jack" Chesbro. For eight innings these two matched goose eggs, with neither team mounting much of a threat. Then all at once the floodgates opened up in the top of the ninth. With two outs and McGann at second, Troy shortstop Bobby Wallace broke the scoreless tie by lining a base hit to left, scoring the big first sacker. After Jimmy Archer worked out a walk, O'Rourke pulled Chesbro for "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity. But Joe apparently left his best stuff in the bullpen this day, and Troy, perhaps sensing the tide turning, swatted him around with impunity. Kid Nichols singled in a run, Fielder Jones knocked in two with another basehit, and Fred Odwell closed out the scoring with a long three base hit to the gap in right center, scoring yet another run. McGinnity then got Gessler to stop the bleeding, but it was a day late and a dollar short as the Haymakers now led 5-0, scoring all five runs after two were out! New York put together a couple of basehits in the bottom of the frame, but Bobby Wallace signed, sealed and delivered the victory by turning a tough grounder into a pretty 6-4-3 double play. Troy and Nichols had marched into New York and done what they needed to do.
Hill Top Park, Home of the PL Champ Highlanders |
Game Four pitted Mordecai Brown, who was going on 2 days rest just as Nichols had done so effectively in Game Three, versus Game One winner Babe Adams. Brown had been knocked around a bit in Game Two, but Spalding was confident that his #2 man would come through in the clutch for him, just as Nichols had done. For their part, New York was looking for their Captain and spiritual leader, Honus Wagner, to snap out of an 0-15 fog. It will be tough for the new Yorkers to win this series without a major contribution from "The Flying Dutchman". Well, in the third inning New York found what they were looking for. Miller Huggins led things off with a base on balls. The leadoff walk usually spells trouble, and this was no exception. Right Fielder Clyde Milan singled Miller to second, setting up Wagner to bring Huggins in with his first base hit of the series. Milan then scored on a Duffy ground ball, and after Selbach made out, New York staged their own two out rally, putting together back-to-back-to-back basehits to run the score to 4-0. That was all Babe needed, as he shut down the Troy ball club quickly and efficiently. One hundred and ten pitches was all he needed to run his WCS record to 2-0 and put New York up three games to one. The Highlanders are now two games away from their second World's Championship - but Troy is back on their Home Turf, and intent on evening things up ...
And back on their home turf, Troy went with their best. Kid Nichols took the hill as the starting pitcher for the third time in five games (he also relieved in game two). The Highlanders countered with Doc White. In the bottom of the very first inning Troy was on the board when Hi Myers singled in Fielder Jones, who had also singled and then stolen 2nd, advancing to third on the overthrow. The score remained at 1-0 until the sixth, when PL MVP Honus Wagner, having a very quiet seies overall, starting things off with a single to left. Honus then stole second, and scored on a Kip Selbach single. Kip advanced on the throw home, and scored himself when Mike Grady, seeing his first action of the series, singled up the middle. 2-1 NY. White and Nichols kept the score right there until the top of the seventh. Doc White helped his own cause by lacing a two bagger into the gap, and was bunted to third by Miller Huggins, the diminutive New York second baseman. Clyde Milan then capped off the mini-rally with an RBI single, putting NY up 3-2. Troy answered in the eighth. The inning started badly for them when Fred Snodgrass, one of a select few Haymakers with any success offensively, twisted his ankle crossing the bag at first. He went down in a heap did not get up again. He was carted off on a stretcher. After the game Doc Bushong, the Troy team doctor, announced Snod would miss the rest of the Series. His .455 bat would surely be missed. But down on the field, the Haymakers proceeded to put together another two out rally. Fielder Jones walked and stole second before being wildpitched to third. He came around when Wagner booted a Myers groundball into left field, with Hi motoring into second on the play. Mean Gene Demontreville then slapped a clutch basehit into left to tie the score at three. When White was pulled for a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth, O'Rourke went to Elmer Steele, who had appearred in two games and notched two saves, o hold the game right there at three all. It didn't happen though, as ace pinch hitter Erwin Harvey made an appearance and boomed a double to right. He then got a huge jump on Steele and put third base in his back pocket, But New York catcher John Warner, who had come in the game for defense in the seventh, sailed the throw into left field, enabling Harvey to trot home with the score! Troy had done it again, winning the game they had to have, and doing it in lightning fashion.
In Game Six, Spalding went away from the Nichols/Brown rotation, pegging George "Sassafras" Winter to take the place of the beleagured Brown. For his part, Mordecai was upbeat, saying he'd be fine if called upon to pitch again this series. Troy fans were more concerned though, as Three Finger hadn't made it past the fifth inning in either of his starts. New York went with Happy Jack Chesbro, who had tossed eight shutout innings in Game Three before Troy's big two out rally in the ninth had shackled him with an 0-1 record.
Chesbro and Sassafras were both on their games this day, as neither team got a runner past second until the New York eighth. Clyde Milan got things going with his fourth hit of the afternoon, a sharp single to right. He then promptly swiped second and scored on a double by Wagner, who had heard taunts of "Old Man!" the whole series long. Wagner for his part, remained stoic, although his teammates weren't above returning Troy's verbal fire at this particular time! Hugh Duffy then plated Wagner with a base hit to right, making it 2-0 New York. That was it for Winter, and Hooks Wiltse came in and cleaned up the mess by enlisting the aid of a pitcher's best friend, the 6-4-3 twin killing.
Wallace's D has been superlative, But Chesbro's Game Six W has NY on the brink of Victory ... |
It was now up to Chesbro to hold Troy down. Jack was on his game this day, and when Erwin Harvey strode to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, Chesbro coaxed a weak foul pop off his bat to the screen in back of the plate. The same John Warner who had overthrown third and enabled Harvey to score the winning run a day earlier, tossed his mask and slid under the ball, cradling it close to his chest protector for the out. That seemed to say "Not this time", and Chesbro marched home with the shutout win from there. Jack finished the game with 10 K's, believed to be a WCS record. More important, the New York ball club was poised to grab it's second Championship, as it takes it's 4-2 lead back to Hill Top Park to see if they can finish the job at home. It should be a dandy of a game, as Troy has announced they will go with The Kid (2-1, 1.65 in 4 games and 3 starts) once again, and New York will counter with The Babe (Adams, that is: 2-0, 0.53 in two starts).
Game Seven figured to be a pitcher's duel, and so it was. It was a scoreless tie in the third when Troy broke through on top, thanks to a fielding gaffe by New York left fielder Hugh Duffy. Mr. Duffy allowed a gound single by catcher Bill Bergen to bounce off the heel of his glove as he charged it, enabling the not-exactly speedy Bergen to motor into third. Troy immediately cashed in when pitcher Brown lofted a fly ball to Duffy, which although he caught it cleanly, was plenty deep enough to score the runner. 1-0 Troy. Adams and Brown proceeded from there to power through the opposing lineups without any hint of trouble until the New York sixth. Honus Wagner, stll struggling at the plate, came out of his slump long enough to smack a sharp liner into left for a one out hit. He was then immediately erased when Mordecai spotted him leaning toward second and threw over - picked off! Hugh Duffy then did his level best to redeem himself for his fielding misadventure in the third when he blasted a three bagger between Jones and Bay in the outfield. Spalding then elected to give a free pass to Kip Selbach, and after Selbach had swiped second to put the go ahead run in scoring position, Brown bore down and got Amos Strunk on a harmless humpback liner to "Mean Gene" Demontreville. Neither team got a runner as far as second after that. For Brown it was a redemption of sorts after getting knocked about in his initial two starts. For Adams, who lowered his ERA from the aforementioned 0.53 to a WCS record 0.38, it was a bitter defeat. With Troy prevailing by that 1-0 score they set up a Game Eight ... and what a game it would be ...
Troy won 101 games during the regular season, using stellar pitching ably backed by the rock solid defense behind it. When it came to scoring runs, they ran, bunted squeezed and otherwise cajoled them onto the scoreboard by any means possible. That is to say they were not an offensive force. So when The Kid ran into a hot New York offense in Game Eight, their fans could be forgiven if they didn't see much hope in their boys mounting a comeback. But down 7-1 in the sixth, thanks to some nice bat work by Duffy and Buck Herzog and company, the Haymakers got to work. They closed the gap to 3 runs on the strength of a walk, a base hit and a big triple by Hi Myers. Those same Troy fans who might have taken heart by this turn of events, could again be forgiven if their hearts sank when Buck Herzog plated a two more teammates (he would finish with 5 ribbies - second most in WCS history) in the seventh, padding the lead to five runs. But they would be shortchanging this ballclub, as they simply would not be denied. New York closer Elmer Steele came on in the eighth in relief of lefty Doc White and was greeted by five consectutive singles, good for two runs and a 9-6, two runners on and one out situation (the out came on the basepaths). "Orator Jim" finally saw that Steele had nothing this day, and yanked him for lefty Billy Campbell. Campbell's job was to get left swinger Erwin Harvey, first and foremost. He seemed to do just that when Harvey dribbled one in front of the plate, but Warner fumbled the ball, perhaps thinking of a play at third, and he ended up with no play. Bases loaded. He bounced back to whiff Fred Odwell, bringing Big Dan McGann to the plate. Now Dan carries the heavy lumber for the Troy ballclub, and he provided the key moment in this ballgame right here. Using that big stick, McGann launched a bomb toward the 542 sign in center that cleared the sacks and knotted the score at nine! Troy had comeback, all the way from the dead and we had a new game. Now New York fans could be forgiven if they were stunned at this turn of events. At the start of the inning they were six outs away from a Championship with a healthy five run cushion. Now Troy had the go ahead run at third and everything had changed. An incredible comeback. Burns did induce Fielder Jones to ground out to end the inning, but it was 9-9. New game.
But New York also had the heart of a champion and they immediately came back in the bottom of the eighth. After a Huggins walk and Milan single, Wagner put the team in prime position for the go ahead score by laying down a beauty of a bunt, making it 2nd & 3rd, one out. Al Burch, who had come in for Duffy earlier for defensive reasons, lofted a sac fly and NY was up again, 10-9. Would that deflate the Troy Nine? Hardly. New pitcher Joe "Iron Man" McGinnity was greeted by three straight base hits, making it 10-10, then after he managed to retire Ham Hyatt on a pop out, Bobby Wallace gave Troy the lead again with yet another single. 11-10, Troy. But NY would not give up there either. Game Seven starter Three Finger Brown was called in to close things for Troy and was greeted by a Patsy Tebeau single. Dave Altizer then pinch ran for the big first baseman and proceeded to swipe second. Buck Herzog then flew out. PH Josh Devore flew out. Down to their last out, Doc Hoblitzell played saviour when he laced a pinch triple on the left field line. 11-11. After PH Jimmy Williams worked a walk, Brown got Milan out to end the inning.
Inning Ten. First batter, Fred Odwell. Triple. And so it went. Inning eight hero McGann singled him in for a new Troy lead and he eventually scored when normally sure handed Honus Wagner booted a Morrie Rath grounder. 13-11 Troy. Was that enough to win this game? Well... Wagner started things off in the bottom of the frame by singling and swiping second. Burch did the same, making it 2nd and third. Selbach walked. Bases loaded, none out. Here we again. With no one on the bench, defensive specialist Bill Killefer had to take his hacks and he lined out meekly, but Buck Herzog came through once more by singling into right, scoring Wagner. But when Burch tried to follow suit he was nailed at the plate on a strong throw by Doc Gessler. After a Shindle walk, it was Doc Hoblitzell on the spot again. But this time Three Finger lost the handle on a curve and it bounced by catcher George Gibson for a wild pitch and a tie ball game. Again.
Inning Eleven was relatively calm, but Troy came on again in the next frame when Dan McGann (again) singled to lead things off. Three Finger, with no one available to either pinch hit or take his place on the mound, did his job by bunting McGann into scoring postion. Morrie Rath then played Hero of the moment (and the game, as it turned out) by knocking a sigle up the middle for a 14-13 Troy lead. New York wasn't ready to go just yet however, as Kip Selbach led off the New York half of the inning with a basehit. But Brown reached back into his reserves and got the next three Highlanders in order and pocketed his second consceutive win in New York ... Troy had finally prevailed! They had mounted comeback after comeback and finished one run better than the home Highlanders. The Haymakers had every reason to be upbeat as they headed to Troy for Game Nine, and New York was left to ponder the broken pieces of what had looked like a sure thing.
Game Nine. This was to be the last nine game series, as the league has decided to convert to a seven game format in the upcoming season. Happy Jack Chesbro on the mound for the visiting Highlanders. Bugs Raymond, giving The Kid a rest, was atop the hill for Troy. Bottom first, Fielder Jones aboard via a walk, Hi Myers electrifies the crowd of almost 4,000 with a shot down the line that clears the fence and gives Troy a 2-0 lead right out of the gate. Here we go again! Things looked very good indeed for the hometown ball club. But it remained 2-0 until the new York fifth. The Highlanders put together three straight singles to start things off and bring the score to 2-1. Catcher John Warner then grounded out to plate the tie run. Jack Chesbro then "helped his own cause" by lifting a sac fly that scored Buck Herzog, who always seemed to be involved in any New York rally. 3-2 NY. The pitcher's duel continued from there until Troy again came back in the eighth, just as in Game Eight. Again it was Hi Myers who did the damage, plating Fielder Jones with a base hit. Three all. But in the top of the ninth New York did their thing once more, as Kip Selbach smashed a triple into the right field corner with two out. The Kid, who had relieved Bugs in the sixth, then surrendered a base hit to Patsy Tebeau, plating Selbach and giving NY the lead ... again. In the bottom of the ninth, Chesbro mowed Troy down 1-2-3, much to the amazement of all concerned, and so when the dust had cleared, it was New York on top. It took until the ninth inning of the ninth game, but we had a Champion - New York - and a series that will not be soon forgotten!
