The 1905 Union League World's Championship Series |
Team Totals | Boxscores |
The 1905 World's Championship Series featured two teams who led their respective leagues almost
from Opening Day on. The Outlaw Reds overtook last year's Champs, the New York Highlanders, early on in the season and never looked back as they paced the league by 10 lengths. This team featured dominating pitching, heavy hitting and sure handed defense while capturing their first ever PL pennant. George Bell was virtually unbeatable throughout the year, finishing at 19-2 with a 1.77 ERA, but he was not a solo act as Chief Bender (15-10, 1.95), Ovral Overall (18-8, 2.28) and Smokey Joe Wood (10-4, 12 saves, 2.12) also had stellar seasons. The Outlaw Reds offense was paced by Homerun Baker (5-86-.317), Patsy Donovan (0-52-.316 42 SB) and Joe Kelley (7-68-.298), but had contributions from every corner of the roster. The D was keyed by shortstop Terry Turner, whose sure hands (an incredibly low total of 16 errors in 119 games!) bolstered the Cincinnati staff all year long.
The Brooklyn Robins franchise made their third post season appearance this year, having come home with the Trophy in the league's initial season in 1876 before returning in 1877 in a losing effort. The 1905 Robins returned the same players to the field as in their disappointing 1900 campaign, but this year the team jelled, riding on the backs of their big three - Cobb, Keeler and Schulte. Old Ty again led the Feds in Stolen Bases with 69, as well as topping the circuit in hits (204), BA (.357) Runs Scored (115) and Doubles (36). Cobb is hands down the best player in either league right now. His outfield mates, Wee Willie Keeler (9-55-.329) and Wildfire Schulte (9-105-.271) also wielded some heavy lumber in the decidedly pitching rich FL. The Flock's moundsmen did not have any one ace to point to, rather whoever was given the ball on a particular day just did the job, as evidenced by the fact that six pitchers won in double figures, but none won as many as 15. Howie Camnitz paced the staff with a 14-9 record to go with his 2.50 ERA. Tom Hughes (2-6, 20 saves, 1.97) again led the FL in saves as he topped the 20 mark for the second consectutive season - the only pitcher to reach that milestone more than once.
Here then, is the story of the 1905 WCS from both cities... Brooklyn before and Cincinnati after.
Vol. 1 October 1905 Iss.1
Brooklyn - Welcome to the fist issue of the Brooklyn Gazette. The official newspaper of the Brooklyn Robins. This has been a great year for the Brooklyn faithful. Free agent pick-up Wildfire Schulte led the league in two of the three triple crown categories. Schulte and fan favorite Willie Keeler led the league with 9 homeruns, a franchise record. Schulte had 105 RBI’s to join only Henry Larkin (107) in 1876 as the only players to knock in more then 100 runs. Ty Cobb had another great year hitting .357 and 204 hits. The second year he has topped 200 hits. Cobb’s average is only .001 points below the club record set by Cap Anson in 1890. His 115 runs scored comes up 2 short of the club record set by Mike Griffin in 1876. A record set by Griffin that is definitely in Cobbs sights is the stolen base mark of 104, also set in 1876. That was the year the Gotham City Crusaders won the World Series. Willie Keeler is hoping on getting an unprecedented 4 consecutive gold glove. He has switched positions in each year, starting in right field in 1890, moving to center in ’91 then back to right for the 1900 campaign and then once again back to center for 1905. With Cobb in left, Keeler in center and Schulte in right the three all-stars make arguably the best outfield ever in UL history.
The pitching hasn't lagged behind either, coming in second in the league with an ERA of 2.69. The staff does not rest on the shoulders of any one man, rather a unit of 8 pitchers being used in various situations. Bill Wolfe, Charlie Case and Win Kellum help out the five main starters of Clark Griffith, Rube Marguard, Johnny Lush, Howie Camnitz, and Fred Glade. Together these players are stronger then when taken apart and looked at individually. This contrasts to the Outlaw Reds staff that relies on the arms of its three big starters, Bell, Bender and Overall. Once again the man that redefined the role of the reliever, Tom Hughes, anchors the relief corps of the Robins. His 20 saves bring his two-year total to a record 45.
Now the Robins are on to Cincinnati for the first two games of the World Series. The matches for each position and who has the edge:

An overview of how we won it all
Hitting
Jack Doyle--Catcher--Dirty Jack only hit .136 but managed to steal two bases. His biggest contribution was behind the plate where he shut down the Robins on the bases allowing 1 steal.
Claude Rossman--First Base--played in 5 of the 6 games hitting .316 with 1 double ,1 rbi and 1 steal. Not spectacular but outperformed the Robins 1b.
Otto Knabe--Second Base--only hit .200 but 3 of his 4 hits were doubles, wasn't great defensively but managed to do an adequate job.
Terry Turner--Short Stop--had a terrible series hitting .091 and committed 3 errors.
Home Run Baker--Third Base--hit .360 without an rbi but scored 8 runs (including 4 in game 6). Hit safely in all 6 games of the series.
Patsy Donovan--Left Field--hit .304 and drove in 5 runs in one game. Stole three bases.
Joe Kelley--Center Field--hit safely in 5 of the 6 games compiling a .318 average, driving in 4 runs and scoring 4 runs. A .423 on base percentage and disappointing .364 slugging average.
Zack Wheat--Right Field--hit .429,drove in 10 runs with 2 homers and a triple. Compiled a OPS of 1.330 in one of the most dominating performances in any series. Also hit safely in all 6 games.
Pitching
Chief Bender-- started 2 games with a 1-1 record and 2.76 era, including a complete game allowing 1 run on 4 hits.
George Bell--1 start 1 win. Allowed 3 runs on 10 hits in 8 innings.
Orval Overall--pitched a complete game shutout with 6 hits.
Jim Pastorius--lost his 1 start due to 4 unearned runs thanks to 5 errors.
Joe Wood--pitched a complete game in game 6 giving up 2 runs on 9 hits. Struck out 7.
The Outlaw Reds were fired up by the Robins GM's comments stating that the Robins outfield was the best in baseball. The Outlaws threesome hit 25/66 and the Robins went 18/67 (thanks to Keeler). The Outlaws also proved the comment about only having three pitchers wrong by starting 5 different guys.
Unfortunately, the season marks the end of an era as many players have announced their retirements. Next year will be a long one especially with the young phenoms likely to be in the Players League.
