The 1910 UL World's Championship Series |
Team Totals | Boxscores |
Game One was a beauty that saw the unbeatable combination of great pitching and the long
ball, much as expected. However the long ball in question came off the bat of Hi Myers, that
veteran of the post season who had batted .550 in the 1900 Fall Classic in a losing effort. And
the great pitching was supplied by Three Finger Brown, the career ERA King of the UL who had
won two games in that same series.
Boston starter Christy Mathewson (24-8, 2.51) and Brown (18-12, 2.67) traded zeroes until
the fourth inning when Troy first sacker Charlie Grimm singled, stole second and took third on
Johnny Bassler's wild throw. Myers, who hit only .228 with four homers during the regular
season, then ripped a pitch from Matty over the left field fence for a 2-0 lead, adding another
heroic deed to his October fable. The blast was all Miner Brown would need on this day as the
visting Haymakers disappointed the Boston faithful at The South End Grounds by taking the first
game of the best of seven tilt. In fact Brown had carried a perfect game into the fifth inning,
when Jack Fournier finally broke through with a clean one out base hit to right field. Indeed,
Brown stifled the big Boston bats throughout the game, with his only moment of concern coming
in the sixth inning. After Buck Weaver fanned to lead off the frame, Bob Bescher, batting for
Mathewson, lined a two bagger into the left center gap. One out later center fielder Johnny
Mostil drew a walk, bringing the go ahead run to the plate in the person of Babe Ruth, he of
the 45 Homeruns and 128 RBI. But Three Finger had baffled the Boston batsmen all day, and here
again he whiffed the Babe to end the inning and the threat. Troy tacked on a run in the seventh
when light hitting catcher Bill Bergen drew a free pass and then stole second. Once again
Bassler threw the ball into center field and Bergen moved on to third. Adding insult to injury,
Bassler then let the next pitch from reliever Buck O'Brien get by him for a passed ball and
Bergen raced home for the 3-0 lead.
Three Finger stymied the Beaners in Game One. |
Boston had one more chance in the ninth when the Babe laced a lead off single to right.
Rogers Hornsby was up next and Jack Fournier behind him, both dangerous hitters to say the
least. Troy skipper Albert Spalding stood by his man though, and Brown came through again as he
induced Rajah to hit into a 6-4-3 twin killing and then fanned Fournier for his sixth K to end
the game and give the Troy ball club a 1-0 lead in the series.
The win was Brown's third in WCS play, one behind manager Spalding's All Time record and
tied with Boston alumnus Rube Waddell for second on the list.
Game Two will be played tomorrow in Boston as Herb Pennock (22-3, 2.19) will square off
against Ed Reulbach (20-8, 3.07).
A record six base balls left the yard today in Boston, a record five of them coming off
Beaneater bats as the PL Champs routed their FL counterparts from Troy by a 10-3 score. You
knew this game would be different from the series' initial contest when Boston's leadoff batter
Zack Wheat swatted a four bagger in the bottom of the first to open the scoring. Troy's
Spalding Award contender and super rookie Herb Pennock got through the rest of that inning but
ran into trouble again in the second. Singles by Pat Collins and Rabbit Maranville and an
intentional pass to Wheat following a Reulbach sacrifice loaded the bags with two down for
Johnny Mostil. The Boston centerfielder then wasted no time in jumping all over a Pennock
fastball, sending it just over the jumping Hi Myers' glove in left field for the first WCS
Grand Slam and a big five run lead for the home team. The Troy hurler seemed a bit rattled by
this sudden turn of events, and Babe Ruth, the next batter took advantage of that and he also
slammed a Pennock delivery far and deep into the afternoon - back to back jacks for the first
time in WCS history! Herb stayed on to retire Hornsby and close out the inning, but the Troy
phenom was done for the day. The Haymakers, meanwhile, had grounded into double plays in each
of the first two frames and now in the third they wasted another runner as third baseman Jimmy
Austin was left stranded on second after a leadoff double. Boston continued the onslaught in
the next frame as Boardwalk Brown, who had replaced Pennock after Spalding had pinch hit for
him in the third, immediately surrendered a two run blast to Pat Collins in the bottom of the
frame. The pattern was set and it was followed faithfully again in the fourth, as Troy stranded
a pair and Boston slammed yet another four bagger - the second by Ruth - to stretch their lead
to 10-0.
Boston starter Ed Reulbach had boasted that he would shut out the Haymakers in game two, and
he almost made good on that prediction, but he left in the ninth after a Bernie Kauff double
was followed by a Dots Miller base on balls. Boston manager Knemeyer went with "The Pride of
Havana", Dolph Luque, to close the game out, but Charlie Grimm finally put Troy on the
scoreboard with a blast of his own, accounting for the final score of the day and averting the
shut out.
So the series heads to Troy knotted at one game apiece. Boston certainly seems to have found their groove at the plate, but Troy did accomplish what they needed to do by taking one of the
two games here in the Hub City. Game Three will be pivotal, and Boston will send Dazzy Vance
(13-8, 3.36) to the hill to try and retake the home field advantage. But the question the fans
in Troy want to know the answer to is this: does Spalding put Pennock back in the box after his
45 pitch effort in Game Two?
BOSTON (AP) - The Troy ball club announced this morning that Hod Eller
would start the third game of the Series as the teams shift to the field up
in Troy. Surprisingly, Ed Mortimer's decision was jeered by the able
batsman swinging lumber for the Bostons.
"Hod Eller is not ready for what is coming," star second sacker Rogers
Hornsby said. "He lacks the ability to hold down our newly motivated
offense."
While Boston cranks are not quite as confident as The Rajah, his mates on
the Beaneaters seem to agree with the overconfident one's take:
"He's not who I would start in the World's Series," third baseman Buck
Weaver laughingly said. "Even if the fix was in."
Boston management was a little more subdued in their appraisals.
"Hod Eller is a very good, young hurler," Manager Knemeyer said. "But we
have our own good, young hurler in the presence of Dazzy Vance to oppose
him. I like our chances but would not take anything away from sweet Mr.
Eller or his lads."
The betting line for the Series shifted wildly this morning, with the
Bostons again favored after the Haymakers had become the favorites with
their impressive Game One victory. The winner of Game Three will be a long
way toward securing the coveted World's Championship.
Boston players board the train headed for upstate New York knotted at one. |
Amid much "discussion" between fans of each ball club, the World's Championship Series
resumed today after a travel day off. As indicated by the managers earlier, Dazzy Vance (13-8,
3.36) would square off against Hod Eller (11-9, 3.45) on this day in Troy. The winner would
claim a 2-1 lead in this best of seven series.
Both teams got a runner aboard in the first, but Boston's Game Two hero Babe Ruth erased
Mostil via the 4-6-3 while in the bottom of the frame Troy's Ross Youngs was left standing on
second after walking and swiping a bag. But the Beaners broke out on top in the next inning
when Buck Weaver singled in the still hitless (if quite vocal) Rogers Hornsby, who had started
the inning with the ever deadly lead off walk. The Haymakers responded in kind, however, as Hi
Myers doubled to left center to lead off the bottom of the same second inning. Two outs later,
with 8th place hitter Bill Bergen (.178 slugging average during the regular season) at the
dish, Hi timed the high leg kick of Vance perfectly and stole third base easily. As Myers
further distracted Vance by dancing off the bag, the Boston hurler left a fat one over the
plate that even Bergen could handle, and the Troy backstop laced a base hit into left to score
Myers and knot the game at one. The pitcher Eller then whiffed on high heat from Vance to end
the inning.
The decisive frame in this game was the third, but it started out meekly enough for the
Bostons as Wheat and Mostil were quickly disposed off. But then the Babe boomed a double over
Ross Youngs' head in center and Eller elected to walk the potentially dangerous Hornsby,
despite his travails at the plate so far in the series. The strategy backfired however, as
slugging first baseman Jack Fournier unloaded on an Eller delivery, sending it over the right
field fence for a very big three run lead. Vance was efficient if not overpowering from there,
and he held the Haymakers in check until the sixth when Dots Miller tripled and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Charlie Grimm, on which Johhny Mostil made a sensational running catch to save
extra bases. Eller was efficient after the three run blast by Fournier as well, allowing just
an unearned run in the fourth when the normally sure handed short stop Bobby Wallace booted a
grounder from the bat of Mostil, plating Johnny Bassler and bringing the score to 5-2. The
Haymakers closed to 5-3 in the ninth versus Boston's closer, Wheezer Dell, when Jimmy Archer
singled in Hi Myers, who had found his way aboard via a Maranville error but pinch hitter and
tying run George Stovall was caught looking at strike three to end the contest and make it 2-1
Boston.
Game Four looks to reprise the Game One starters; Christy Mathewson (0-1, 3.00 in the
series) for the Bostons and Three Finger Brown (1-0, 0.00) for the Troy ball club. This is must
win time for the Troys, while a win by Boston move the Beaners to within a game of their second
Championship.
Having taken a critical 2-1 lead in the Series (the game recap of which was
so expertly presented by John Mortimer) the boisterous Bostons are
uncharacteristically subdued in their thoughts on Game Four. Having spoken
with a few of the lads at length, there is one big reason why:
Three Finger Brown.
Mordecai Brown left the Boston batsmen flailing in Game One. And while the
gang is very confident in their own ace, Christy Mathewson, the fact that,
in real-life, Brown was a career 13-12 against Big Six, in spite of an
inferior career winning percentage, contributes to the boys having doubt.
"We don't worry about our kid, " Babe Ruth opined. "But that Brown fella
just comes out to pitch when it matters. "
Boston's Big Man at The Dish. |
Light hitting shortstop Rabbit Maranville also is respectful of Brown's
ability: "He may not have the charisma or personality of some of the other
guts, but he flat-out pitches. I am looking forward to another chance at
him but am not optimistic of the result."
This sort of jaundiced view is very standard among the boys. While Rogers
Hornsby has kept up his arrogant air, he certainly is not stirring up
trouble, either. But there is a sense of dread among the team that is
apparent. Asked if he felt demoralized by the team's not believing in him,
staff ace Christy Mathewson shook his head.
"No, not at all. Brown is a fantastic hurler, one of the all-time greats.
He got the better of me in Game One and he deserves to be the favorite
here. But I have been sharpening up my fadeaway, and I am going to do my
best to force him to put zeroes on the board if he wants to bring his bunch
back into the Series."
Certainly Matty is a special pitcher in his own right. But Brown is already
earning a controlling level of generalship over the Bostons and, should he
take Game Four and be called upon later in a potential Game Seven, the
mental block in front of our lads may be too great to overcome. As such,
Game Four takes on an extra level of importance. Win or lose, the Bostons
must overcome the specter of the legendary Three Finger Brown.
While everyone is talking of the second matchup of two of the best pitchers base ball has
to offer, this reporter has learned that Troy manager Albert Spalding is planning to throw
a curveball in Game 4. The name of that curveball is Mike Prendergast!
Reports from down at the ballpark have brought back eyewitness accounts of Mike Prendergast
seemingly getting ready to start Game 4. When asked, Mike just nodded his head toward his
manager while keeping mum. Spalding himself just smiled, shook his head and said “I'm
retiring after this series, so I want to win it bad. But you know I ain't playing no more,
and it was all o' these guys that got us here. They all had a part to play -- each and
every one. I can count on each player I got to do his part. We ain't like that other team
that depends completely on a scant few players to carry the rest. Whoever I put on that
mound will beat the pants off'n that Christian Gentleman. If'n you want to see who that'll
be, then come out to the game later, boys. Come out to the game."
Mike Prendergast or Mordecai Brown? That was the question of the day here in beautiful
upstate New York. The stands were fairly abuzz with anticipation as the local's heroes took the
field on this sunny afternoon. And it was just as reported in the Troy Gazette - Mike
Prendergast had the base ball in his right hand and the weight of the series on his shoulders.
The Federals were already down two games to one, going to the precipice of a 3-1 deficit was
not a desirable outcome. His opponent was no mystery, of course. The beaneater Ace, the
reliable Big Six, Christy Mathewson would be going for the Bostons. The Haymakers had already
defeated Matty once this series, so they were confident they could reprise that effort today.
Of course, Troy's own Ace was on the hill for them that day, and there were some who said he
should be shouldering the load in this game, not the rookie. But that's fodder for the cranks,
there was a game to be played ...
The Beaneaters' Rogers Hornsby finally reached base safely in this, the fourth game of the
series - and he made it count - his first base hit drove in Johnny Mostil in the top of the
first, giving the Bostons a 1-0 lead even before all the local fans had found their seats. The
murmurs could be heard throughout the park when the speedy outfielder crossed the plate - “What was Spalding thinking throwing the kid out there?!". But give the kid credit; he settled down from there and escaped without incurring any further damage. This was destined to be a
pitcher's duel; through seven innings the 1-0 score held. In the fifth, Boston third sacker
Buck Weaver had a chance to drive in a pair with two down, but could not come through in the
clutch. For his part, Mathewson was on his game today, and Troy's best chance to tie came in
the seventh when ancient short stop Bobby Wallace led off with a two bagger over Mostil's head
in center field. But he was immediately picked off by the alert Matty, and Mathewson then
struck out Jimmy Austin to end the inning with his white wash untarnished. The game was decided
in the top of the eighth however, when Hornsby drew a lead off walk, and Rabbit Maranville and
Jack Fournier followed with base hits to load the bags with none out. Spalding then pulled the
exhausted Prendergast for the lefty Doc Watson. It was indeed a good effort by the kid, but the
situation was dire his ball club. The good doctor then served up a bases clearing two base hit
to the Boston backstop Johnny Bassler, and all of a sudden it was 4-0, Beaners. Mostil added a
one out sac fly to make it a four run frame and a 5-0 ball game.
Troy's Ross Youngs had a tough series |
With Matty in control, the Bostons looked to have the game wrapped up. Indeed, although the
Haymakers did not go quietly, breaking the shutout in the ninth on a Wallace base hit, Matty
and the Beaneaters were ultimately too much in the end. The scoreboard after the contest read
5-1, Boston. The series now stands at 3-1, Boston. The sun is beginning to set in beautiful
upstate New York. All the Haymakers are thinking about is keeping the series alive to play in
Boston again. That means they will have to win tomorrow. There is always talk of “must win“
games during a season, but there is really only one must win game in a team's season. With
Troy, that game is their next. The Beaneaters, on the other hand, have put together an
impressive series; one more game, be it here or back home in Boston will mean the Championship.
The Beaneaters are in control, just like Matty was on this day.
Probable Game Five starters: Boston: Ed Reulbach (1-0, 2.25), Troy: Brown (1-0, 0.00)
Nobody in the Boston dressing room is saying that the World's Championship
Series is all over but the crying. But it seems apparent that the boys feel
confident about the outcome underneath.
"The Troy club is a talented bunch," big first sacker Jack Fournier nodded.
"But we are a tough club to win three straight from."
Rogers Hornsby was his usual colorful self, raising questions about
acclaimed Troy manager Ed Mortimer: "If I am a manager and have the best
pitcher in history available or a journeyman who enjoyed a good season, I
have a hunch that I am going to go with the best pitcher in history."
While few would be so scathing in their appraisal of Ed's decision making,
there were a lot of eyebrows raised about the move.
"I play the 'hunch' as much as anybody," legendary skipper Harry Wright
commented. "But when you have the best guy in the game, who is a true
'money' guy and lives for the big game, how can you go away from him?!"
The ace-in-the-hole, of course, is that Ed can use Three Finger to start
Game Five and force the Series back to Boston. The bad news is that it will
mark Brown's final start of the Series, unless he is pulled from the game
in the earliest stages.
"It is far too early to pass judgment," a loyal Haymakers fan commented.
"If we lose this Series, then second guess Ed. But he has not done wrong by
us yet and we believe in him here again. Wait till the Series is over to
denigrate or celebrate."
For once, a rooter may have spoken the most sensible words of all.
The final was 2-0. There was a complete game from one starting pitcher, encompassing 142
pitches, many of them thrown with runners aboard and danger at the plate and on deck. The
opposite team's starter threw just 9 pitches, yet did not surrender a run before leaving the
contest. This was not a typical game, that much is for sure. The starters just mentioned were
Hooks Wiltse for Troy and Spittin' Bill Doak for Boston. The action started right away however,
as Zack Wheat and Johnny Mostil set the table for Boston's big three with a single and a walk,
respectively. Wiltse bore down however, getting The Bambino to whiff and The Rajah on a
harmless pop to Duke Kenworthy, the new Troy second sacker. That brought Big Jack Fournier to
the plate and he laced one safely to center where Ross Youngs fielded it on the run and threw a
one hopper to Archer, who had the plate expertly blocked; Wheat was out easily. In the second
Boston again got the first two batters aboard via a walk and a basehit, but once again Wiltse
rebounded to escape unscathed. Manager Knemeyer had surprised the park when he pulled Doak for
a pinch hitter after he hardly had time to get the base ball properly slippery, but Hendryx was
not up to the challenge and struck out. Lefty Eppa Rixey came on and did exactly what Spittin'
Bill had done in the first - allowed a base hit but got an inning ending double play to get out
of any trouble.
The third inning was more trouble for Wiltse, but again he pitched out of it, leaving the
sacks filled with Beaneaters, but none had been allowed to score. Meanwhile the Bostons had put
the clamp on Troy and they were no longer getting any baserunners at all. In the sixth, Boston
broke through for all the runs they would get - or need. There were no dramatic moon shots off
the bat of Ruth, no line drives off the bat of Hornsby. No, little Rabbit Maranville plated the
winning Boston run with a sacrifice fly to Benny Kauff in right field. Once again the Bostons
pinch hit for their hurler - none would ever come to the plate this day - and this time Chick
Gandil delivered with a long double and an insurance run for his fellows. All of a sudden the
pressure was on the Haymakers, down by two late in the game and with no more room for error.
But that was the game right there - Troy would get just one runner aboard the rest of the
afternoon - Bobby Wallace with a one out single in the 8th - but he was stranded. The Pride of
Havana, Dolph Luque, closed out the game for the winner Ed Reulbach, and we had our 1910 Union
League World's Champions - The Boston Beaneaters! Congratulations to Dirk Knemeyer for his
Championship season! The Beaners are once again on top of the UL world! 102 regular season wins
and 4 of 5 in the WCS - the Beaneaters had a season for the ages in 1910!
