The 1920 UL World's Championship Series |
Team Totals | Boxscores |
Brooklyn, NY (AP) In a close contest that featured big moments from big stars, Game One ironically turned on a late inning pinch hit by an unknown outfielder. Dazzy Vance (19-9, 3.52)
and Eddie Rommel (20-9, 2.98) were tagged to kick the series off. The Brooklyn knuckleballer
immediately got in a hole when normally sure-handed second sacker Frankie Frisch booted Eddie
Collins' groundball to start the contest. One out later, All Time UL Homerun King Babe Ruth
blasted one into the cheap seats in right field to give Boston the early lead. The four bagger was the Bambino's third in WCS play, tying him with Zack Wheat for a share of the All Time Series mark as well. Brooklyn struck back in the third when aging superstar Ty Cobb singled sharply to right, then proved he can still motor around the sacks when he swiped second and third base off the strong armed Boston receiver Gabby Hartnett. Frisch then atoned for his earlier miscue afield, displaying his batting prowess by doubling Cobb in for the first Robins tally. Rookie Of The Year candidate
Bill Terry then knotted the score at two apiece with a big single. The real damage was done in
the next inning however as the Robins vaulted to a 5-2 lead, doing their damage in small doses
with two singles, two walks, a hit batsman, a sac fly and a fielder's choice. That would be all
for Vance as Beaneaters skipper Knemeyer went to the bullpen to try and shut down the powerful
Robins. They did the job too, allowing only three baserunners the rest of the way (a Stengel
single, a walk and an error). Meanwhile Rommel's flutterballs were keeping Boston in check,
although they did trim the lead to 5-3 in the sixth on a Rabbit Maranville single. However, the
game finally turned in the eighth, when after a Fournier base knock, Rommel uncorked a
wildpitch, sending him to second. Harnett followed with a single, making it a one run game.
Former Robin Cy Williams then tied the game at 5 when he doubled pinch runner Ted Cather home.
"Uncle Robbie", Robins skipper Wilbert Robinson then brought in Chief Yellowhorse to squelch the Boston rally. The Chief put down Rabbit Maranville, but that's when Butch Weis (any
relation to Al?!) gave Boston their first lead with his clutch single. Brooklyn did put the
tying run in scoring position in the bottom of that frame, but Fred Toney got Terry to fly out
to end the threat. Toney pitched the final two innings to pick up the save, while Al Mamaux got
the win.
"That's a tough one, seeing as how we had `em down early", related Robinson after the game. "But ya gotta win four to get the Championship and we'll be back tomorrow to do it again."
Eppa Rixey (19-10, 3.94) will go for Boston while Lee Meadows (18-11, 3.12) counters for the
Robins in Game Two, also in Brooklyn.

Ruth tied WCS HR mark in Game One |
Brooklyn, NY (AP) Babe Ruth powered the Boston Beaneaters to a second straight victory over the
Brooklyn Robins at Ebbets Field this afternoon, giving the boys from Boston a 2-0 Series lead
as they head back to New England a happy bunch. Once again Ruth came up big in the first
inning, this time doubling home Eddie "Cocky" Collins from second base to stake the Beaneaters to an early 1-0 lead. When Rogers Hornsby immediately followed with a long homerun to
centerfield, the Robins found themselves in an early 3-0 hole. Lee Meadows, the Brooklyn
starter, then walked first baseman Jack Fournier and allowed a single to catcher Gabby Hartnett
before inducing Cy Williams to ground into a 3-6-3 twin killing to stop the bleeding before
things got really ugly for the hometown cranks. In the third inning Ruth broke the record for
Career WCS Homeruns (Zack Wheat - 3) that he had tied in Game One, and in the process put the
Beaners up by five runs. Those five scores looked like more than enough support for Boston
starter Eppa Rixey as he continued to hold the Robins scoreless through the first seven frames.
The PL Champs then put the game out of reach in the eighth when Eddie Collins launched one over
the wall with a couple of teammates aboard to extend the lead to 8 and thereby knocking Meadows
off the hill and into the showers. Brooklyn manager Wilbert Robinson then brought in reliever
Ben Tincup, but he was treated rudely as well by the Boston sluggers. Leftfielder Riggs
Stephenson touched him for a three bagger and he came around on a Ruth sac fly to make it a 9-0
ball game before the inning was over. Brooklyn showed some life at the end, notching 5 runs
over the final two frames, but it was a case of too little, too late for the Federals as Boston
took Game Two by a count of 11-5.
"Things may look tough right now", said Brooklyn receiver Hank Gowdy after the game in a quiet clubhouse, "But these guys never say die. I remember that well from the last series." Gowdy played against Brooklyn in a tough 7 game series in 1915 that wasn't decided until the final at bat. "We're running on all cylinders right now, it's true", Gowdy's counterpart Gabby Hartnett was saying in the visitor's locker room, "But nobody is saying this thing is over yet." But while most guys were careful not to give out any "bulletin board material", Robins centerfielder Ty Cobb was not shy about making brash statements. "Baby Ruth and his muscle-bound cronies don't know the first thing about the game of base ball. We'll go up to Boston and teach `em a thing or three, you just watch. Now get that @#%! notebook outta my
face, sissy boy, or you'll be eatin' it for supper tonight."
Scheduled Game Three starters are Rey Kremer (14-8, 2.44) for the Robins and Dolf Luque
(18-11, 2.82) for the Beaneaters.

Gabby Hartnett had a big series for the Beaneaters |
Boston, MA (AP) Ty Cobb made good on his earlier boast as the visiting Robins downed the PL
Bostons rather handily by a final score of 11-2 at Fenway Park today. Every Brooklyn player had
at least one hit and eight different players crossed the plate as the Robins won with a team
effort. The FL Champs jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead and wasted no time in pushing it to
5-0 in the second. The first runs scored with two out in the first when Kenny Williams singled
off Boston starter Dolf Luque and then was plated on a long homerun by first sacker Bill Terry.
Not exactly the "inside base ball" favored by Mr. Cobb, but one suspects he had no problem with
the results. The second inning tallies might have been more his style however, as the Robins
turned a free pass and five singles, including one by Cobb himself, into three additional runs.
The Brooklyn all star also stole another base, his third of the series. That was more than
enough support for Robins starter Rey Kremer, who was very effective in keeping the Beaneaters
off balance while pitching into the seventh inning today. Chief Yellowhorse held the Bostons in
check the rest of the way for the Flock.
The eighteen hits collected on the day by the Brooklyn batsmen set a
WCS record for a nine inning game (NYH & TRY each had over 20 in an extra inning affair in
1900).
"What did I tell you?" crowed Cobb to any who would listen after the game. "That's what I'm talking about."
"Just what we needed" Brooklyn outfielder Kenny Williams was saying after the game. "We made a statement today. We aren't rolling over for nobody."
"We had a bad day at the park today, what else is there to say?" contributed Eddie Collins. "But that's the beauty of this game - we get another chance tomorrow."
Rogers Hornsby probably spoke for most Boston fans when he described his feelings: "Bah
humbug."

Casey Stengel was Brooklyn's leading batter |
Boston, MA (AP) Once again the Robins jumped out to an early lead in today's ball game and once
again they looked to have things firmly in their control as the game progressed. But some last
minute heroics by a slight man named Rabbit and an errant throw by the Flock's very vocal
leader ruined that game plan and vaulted the Beaneaters to within a win of their third World's
Championship.
Kenny Williams provided the early lead when he slammed a first inning offering from Boston
starter Dazzy Vance over the centerfield fence, scoring Frankie Frisch, who had doubled. Bill
Terry and Casey Stengel then followed with base hits, and Terry made it 3-0 when he scored on a
Hiene Groh groundball. The Robins added one in the third when Williams plated Frisch again,
this time with a line drive single. It was 4-0 Robins now, and they had all the momentum on
their side it seemed. But the Beaners came right back in the bottom of that frame against
Brooklyn ace Eddie Rommel. After sending Ruth to first when an errant knuckleball tapped him on
the shoulder, Hornsby smacked a basehit to left. Rommel then loaded the bags when he gave a
free pass to first sacker Jack Fournier. With the infield set at doubleplay depth, Hartnett
scored Ruth with a slow bounder to short. Former Robin Cy Williams then provided the big hit of
the inning when he plated Hornsby and Fournier, who had also moved up on the Hartnett grounder,
with a base hit to right. 4-3, Brooklyn. It was now a one run game. Both starters took control
of the game from there, shutting the offenses down. Boston starter Vance was lifted for a pinch
hitter in the seventh and in the eighth Bill Terry tripled into the right-center field gap off
his reliever Fred Toney. It looked as if Brooklyn might plate an important insurance run here,
but he was left stranded when both Stengel and Groh fouled out. The Robins again got a runner
to within 90 feet of home in the next inning when Hornsby booted a Gooch grounder and shortstop
Hod Ford singled him to third. In perhaps the turning point of the game, Brooklyn skipper
Robinson elected not to pinch hit for Rommel, and the hurler whiffed after failing to lay down
the squeeze bunt. Next up was Ty Cobb and he was retired on a pop out. Frisch stepped into the
box next and his effort was futile as well as he ended the inning with a sharp groundball hit
right at third baseman Eddie Collins. Toney had dodged bullets in consecutive innings, and now
it was Boston's turn to apply the pressure. They would fare better than their Brooklyn
counterparts.
Gabby Hartnett led off the bottom of the ninth with a basehit and the "speedy" receiver was
promptly removed for a pinch runner, Ted Cather. Cy Williams was up next, and the clutch
outfielder had been trouble for Brooklyn all series. Rommel, still going strong, had no problem
with the lefty swinging outfielder however, retiring him on a weak pop fly to Frisch. Next up
was Rabbit Maranville, with the pitcher Toney on deck. Toney would never reach the box however,
as the little shortstop put his back into a knuckleball that didn't, sending the horsehide
sphere over Cobb's head in centerfield. Cather scored easily, tying the game, and Cobb's throw
skidded away from Groh at third base enabling Maranville to circle the bases, scoring the
winning run in the process.
The Brooklyn squad was understandably numb after the contest, having had victory snatched
away from them in the last minute in such a manner. Now they are one loss away from elimination
but the manager refused to feel sorry for himself. "We win the next one and we go back home,
and I like our chances there. Boston is a tough opponent, no doubt, but we've won three in a
row before and we can do it again." Today's hero, the man named Rabbit, was seeing things
differently, however. "This team never gives up, and today was a great example of that. Wow,
what a way to win a game, especially after that Game Three debacle! We can really feel it now!"
Tomorrow's scheduled starters: Lee Meadows (18-11, 3.12) for Brooklyn and Eppa Rixey
(19-10, 3.94) for Boston. Series is 3 games to 1, Boston's advantage.

Game Five starter Eppa Rixey |
Boston, MA (AP) The Boston Beaneaters rode a first inning rally to the Championship today at Fenway, sending the city into a frenzy and the Robins home yet again without the ultimate prize. In what would be a familiar refrain on this day, Brooklyn threatened but did not score to start the game, but the Bostons came through with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they never relinquished. Robins hurler Lee Meadows, who gave up nine runs in a Game Two loss, found himself immediately in hot water again here in Game Five. After handing a free pass to Collins, Stephenson and Ruth singled to drive home the first Boston run. After retiring Hornsby, Meadows uncorked a wild pitch, putting both runners in scoring position. Jack Fournier did not leave him there however, as he collected two RBI with a line drive in front of Williams in right field, making the score 3-0. Hartnett followed with a long double which plated the Boston first baseman to increase the lead to four runs. Meadows settled down and retired Cy Williams and Maranville, but the Robins were in a hole already. Brooklyn threatened in the second but could not find a big hit as they squandered a two on, no out opportunity when O'Neill, Meadows & Cobb failed to get the runners home. Boston again cashed in on their opportunity however as they tacked on another run in the second when Stephenson singled home Collins, who had doubled earlier.
The third inning brought more of the same: two on, no outs got nothing for the Flock. This time Johnny Mokan killed the rally when he smashed a sharp grounder to Maranville, the Game Four batting hero, who turned a pretty 6-4-3. Finally the Brooklyns broke through in the fourth and fifth with single runs, but it was just not enough. Boston portsider Eppa Rixey picked up his second win of the series despite allowing 10 hits in his five plus innings of work, and Al Mamaux and Fred Toney continued the Boston bullpen's stellar work as they allowed no runs and just a single base hit the rest of the way. For the series, in over 14 innings the Boston relievers posted a 2-0 mark to go with a 3.68 ERA contrasted with a 2-1, 6.23 for the starters over 30 plus innings. Toney collected his second save and did not allow a run in the series.
"We gave it all we had, but we came up just short time and time again." Brooklyn's Cobb was telling the local scribes after the game was over. "You gotta give them the credit; they proved they were the better team out there. I hate to go out like this, but I'm afraid this is the last you'll see of me, boys. I'm hanging up my spikes. We had a good run, though."
"Very gratifying, this was." Ruth was saying amid the celebration after the game in a wild Boston clubhouse. "We had a tough road to hoe, battling the Stars all year then this here tough Brooklyn team, but here we are again - on top of the world!" And then to raucous laughter: "The soda pop is on me today boys!"

Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
