The 1925 UL World's Championship Series |
Team Totals | Boxscores |
Cincinnati, Ohio (AP) The hometown Outlaw Reds and the St. Louis Stars played a tight game for
seven innings here at Redland Field until the visiting nine decided the outcome with a decisive
5 run outburst over the last two frames of the ball game. The 1925 World's Championship Series
opening game looked like it might go the Reds way when Stars rightfielder Harry "Slug"
Heilmann, last season's WCS MVP, tried on the goat's horns when he booted away a Ray Schalk fly
ball in the fourth inning, letting two O Reds baserunners cross the plate in the process. That
miscue erased a 2-1 Stars lead and gave the Cincinnatis their first lead of the game. That lead
did not hold up however, as the Stars stormed right back a couple of innings later. Starter Bob
Shawkey (17-6, 2.37 in the regular season) cooked up a recipe for disaster when Lou Gehrig
laced a single up the middle and Heilmann followed by working out a free pass on just 5 pitches
to start the sixth. The man they call Big Poison, Paul Waner, AKA the Cincinnati
centerfielder's big brother, was up next and he bounded into a force play, putting runners at
the corners with the bottom third of the order coming up. But as is so often the case, the
unheralded players delivered the most damaging blows. In the latest example of this phenomenon,
Heine Groh and Woody English followed with back to back two baggers, giving the Stars the lead
for good at 4-3. The 5 late runs plated by the Stars provided insurance for the victory, as
submarining Carl Mays (22-7, 3.65), with ninth inning help from Bill Harris (7-5, 3.77 25
saves) held the Outlaw Reds in check the rest of the way.
Game Two will feature a pair of lefties: George Mogridge (13-7, 4.44) of the Stars
against Hooks Dauss (17-13, 3.42) of the Outlaw Reds.

Paul and Lloyd Waner, A Little Sibling Rivalry |
Cincinnati, Ohio (AP) After dropping Game One at home in convincing fashion, the Outlaw Reds
came up big today in front of a record crowd to even the Series at a game apiece. George August
"Hooks" Dauss had just what the Cincinnati Nine needed in his resilient left arm, as he shut
down the vaunted St. Louis offense, holding them scoreless until the eighth inning. But his
teammates had built a 5-0 lead by then, and Dauss remained firmly in control as he tossed the
complete game. Just as in Game One, the big blows came from the bottom of the order. This time
of course, it was the "lesser lights" of the Outlaw Reds who came up big. The light htting
keystone combo of Joe Boley and Ski Melillo combined to knock in 3 runs in the fourth, and that
was all Dauss would need on this fine September day. But just for good measure, FL batting King
Bing Miller doubled home an insurance run in the 5th and singled in another in the 7th to close
out the Cincinnati scoring. Miller had three hits on the day.
"This was a good win for us", said Cincinnati skipper Joe Kelley after the game, "More for
how we won than anything else. We got good pitching and clutch hitting today and that is Outlaw
Reds baseball through and through. I'm proud of the way my boys came back after letting game
One get away from us like it did." The Stars agree, it seems. "They are a tough bunch. Those
guys played a solid game, no doubt about it", offered St. Louis player/manager Frisch
afterwards. "But we got the split, so we've got the home field advantage now" Frisch continued,
referring to the fact that three of the remaining five games will be played in St. Louis.
Game Three will be played in St. Louis Monday afternoon. The scheduled starters are Red
Faber (19-9, 2.66) for Cincinnati and Guy Bush (12-9, 3.48) for St. Louis.

Earle Combs Drives One To The Gap |
St. Louis (AP) The Federal League Champion Cincinnati Outlaw Reds took a 2-1 lead in games
behind a superb effort by Red Faber today, winning by a 5-2 final score. Shortstop Jackie
Tavener had a pair of clutch basehits to plate two Cincinnati runs and his teammates continued
their running ways, stealing three more bases to bring their Series total to eight so far. "The
Outlaw Reds are playing good, solid base ball", opined St. Louis first sacker Lou Gehrig, "They
are excelling in every facet of the game. If we don't raise our level of play I'm afraid this
thing will be over, and quick." Lou is certainly doing his part however, slamming the sphere
at a .556 clip, and among his hits are a pair of triples and the Series' only homerun. But The
Outlaw Reds, who led the FL in hitting, pitching and fielding have continued their overall
excellence in the Series. By contrast the Stars, who live and die on their hard hitting lineup,
have been shut down by the Cincinnati staff thus far. The Cincinnati Nine are outhitting the
Stars .273 to .248, although St. Louis does have 10 extra base hits to Cincy's 4.
"That is one deep staff. They're just trouble no matter who's on the mound." said St. Louis
rightfielder Harry Heilmann in a quiet locker room after the game. "Faber was just coming at us
with everything but the dang kitchen sink."
"This was our biggest win of the year so far, obviously", offered Cincinnati's third baseman
Pie Traynor, "But nobody's under any illusions here. We are in for a tough fight all the way. I
am glad to see Big Shaw will take the hill tomorrow for us though. I know he'll come out
strong. He's a bulldog."
Game Five features a rematch of the Game One starters: Bob Shawkey (0-1, 5.14) for
Cincinnati against Carl Mays (1-0, 2.25) of St. Louis.

Pie Traynor Led The O Reds' Offensive Charge |
St. Louis (AP) The Cincinnati Outlaw Reds, behind a relentless attack that produced 17 hits and
9 runs, captured Game Four at Sportsmans park yesterday by a score of 9-5. That puts the
Cincinnatis just one game away from becoming the first Federal League team to win the World's
Championship. Centerfielder Lloyd Waner, whose brother plays right field for the Stars, broke
out of his Series long slump in a big way, leading the barrage with four base knocks and three
Runs Batted In. Every Outlaw Reds starter, except winning pitcher Bob Shawkey, had at least one
base hit and either scored or knocked in a run.
The big blows came in the fourth with the game tied at two. Shortstop Jackie Tavener doubled
to lead off the inning and was immediately plated on a Ski Melillo single, as the bottom of the
Cincinnati order hurt St. Louis yet again. Catcher Ray Schalk followed that up with another
basehit putting runners at first and second. Moundsman Shawkey then laid down a perfect
sacrifice bunt, one of four on the day for the O Reds, setting the stage for "Little Poison".
Paul's little brother quieted the St. Louis partisans with a basehit over Frankie Frisch's head
into rightfield, scoring a pair and making it a 5-2 ball game. The Outlaw Reds never looked
back from there.
"Well, this here's a nice hole we've dug for ourselves", Frisch said in the post game
conference. "It `aint gonna be easy, but hell, we're coming out tomorrow and playing the game
just the same. Believe me, we will be there with bells on."
"There's still ball to be played." echoed Lloyd in the Cincinnati locker room. "We know what
we gotta do. And we're gonna do it." Is that a guarantee, he was asked? "Naw, don't you be
stirring that kind of stuff up now! We're just gonna do what we gotta do is all."
Game Five will feature Hooks Dauss (1-0, 2.00) for the Cincinnati Nine versus George Mogridge
(0-1, 6.43) for the Stars. The game will be played in St. Louis.
St. Louis (AP) With the their season on the line, Larrupin' Lou Gehrig came through in historic
fashion for his Stars today at Sportsmans Park. Big Lou slammed a record three homeruns - the
first time a player has hit more than 1 in a WCS game - leading his team to a 7-2 victory and
back from the precipice of elimination. Cincinnati starter Hooks Dauss, who handled the Stars
rather easily in Game Two had a much tougher go of it the second time around. The Stars jumped
out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Gehrig connected for the first time with Frisch aboard via
a one out single. In the third it was the same recipe that done him in. The pesky Frisch was
sitting on second after lining a two bagger between Waner and Miller when Gehrig lofted another
blast into the right field bleachers, giving St. Louis a 4-0 lead. The Stars then extended that
lead to six without Lou's help in the fourth, the big blow coming off the bat of Earle Combs,
who lined a two out, two run single to center. Dauss recovered to retire Frisch, but his day
was done. Joe Kelley removed Hooks for a pinch-hitter in the top of the next frame and replaced
him with righthander Benny Frey. Benny proved he could do no better than his teammate when it
came to Gehrig however when Lou lined his third pitch of the day into the cheap seats for his
third blast of the game and fourth of the Series for a 7-0 St. Louis cushion. Meanwhile St.
Louis starter George Mogridge was having no such problems with the Cincinnati lineup. The O
Reds got a two run single from Joe Boley in the seventh - the bottom of the order again! - but
little else as the St. Louis lefty cruised to a complete game victory.

Gehrig Put On A Power Show |
"What a show!", exclaimed Frisch after the contest. "We needed our guy to come up big and he
did exactly that. You could feel the change come over the team after he went downtown in the
first. Then to go deep again, then yet again! We just seemed to play at another level after
that. Oh man, lets play another one right now!"
"He's been killing us all Series, that there is no secret boys." Skipper Joe Kelley was
saying before boarding the train back to Cincinnati. "But the fact is we've got two (games
left) to get one. I like our chances."
Game Six will feature Guy Bush (0-1, 3.86) for St. Louis versus Red Faber (1-0, 1.13) of
Cincinnati as the starting pitchers. The game will be played in Cincinnati. The Outlaw Reds
lead the series 3 games to 2.
Cincinnati (AP) Behind another gutsy performance by Red Faber today at Redland Field, the
Cincinnati Outlaw Reds beat the St. Louis Stars by a tally of 3-0 and in so doing clinched
their second World's Championship, and their first since switching to the Federal League. Joe
Kelley's charges also became the first Federal League team to capture the brass ring, ending
the Players League streak of 5 consecutive Series wins.
Faber was nothing short of sensational. He held the Stars to 4 harmless singles and an Earle
Combs triple. Red hot slugger Lou Gehrig, who finished with a WCS record .600 BA and 1.450 SLA,
knocked out two of those basehits but was stranded both times by clutch pitching by venerable
spitballer. During the series Faber held St. Louis to a .183 BA, including a 1 for 30
performance - that's "good" for an .033 average - by the righthanders! Simply overpowering. On
this day, when the O Reds might have been back on their heels a bit after Gehrig's fireworks
display in Game Five, Red simply never let the Stars into the game. His diving, darting
deliveries had the St. Louis batsmen flailing at thin air all game. Still, the St. Louisians
managed to get the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but the steely nerved righthander
induced pinch-hitter Cotton Tierney to ground out to short to end the game - and begin the
celebration!
Cincy got the one run they needed in the second frame. Cuckoo Christenson laced a one out
two bagger to left off St. Louis starter, and loser, Guy Bush. One out later Ski Melillo (the
bottom of the order again!) singled him in. The Outlaw Reds tacked on a couple of insurance
runs in the fifth when Bing Miller singled off Heine Groh's glove, scoring Lloyd Waner. Groh
then tossed the ball away, which allowed Pie Traynor to score on the play as well. St. Louis
committed three errors on the day.

Mr.Unhittable, Red Faber |
St. Louis player/manager Frankie Frisch, who pulled a hamstring running out a fly ball in
the sixth and had to be removed from the game, had nothing but praise for his opponents. "They
shut us down, no question `bout it. Its a team game, and they had the better team. And they
proved it again today. Nobody but Lou hit the ball all Series. You can't win on the back of one
man. And ya know that Faber is just plain nasty. He was just unhittable out there. Now if
you'll excuse me, I gotta get back to the trainers room." Frisch's opposite number, Joe
Kelley, was eloquent in his brevity: "Woo-Hoo! Champions Of The World!"
