| The 1877 Union League World's Championship Series |
The second Union League World's Championship Series was played between returning West Division Champs The Gotham City Crusaders, and the new Eastern Division top dogs, the Haymakers from Troy. Troy had ridden in on the strong right arm of Albert Spalding, who set UL records for Wins, Innings Pitched, Games Started, and just about any other pitching category you can name. Gotham City's top hurler,Old Hoss Radbourne was no slouch himself, as he tacked on 31 victories to the 23 he posted in `76, cementing his place as one of the league's premier moundsmen. These two teams were 1-2 in the league pitching leaders.
After the Crew bashed Spalding and his Haymakers for 8 runs and taking the opener by a 8-3 count, it looked like maybe Gotham City was preparing for a dynasty. But Albert J. bounced back, limiting the potent G.C. offense to just 7 runs over the following three contests, while the Bat Dudes complicated things for themselves by committing 7 of their series total 14 errors in that span.
While Radbourne was far from ineffective, Spalding dominated after that first game, and won the series MVP easily, which upon recieving he announced his retirement. "I'm going to go into the sporting goods business" he announced at a celebratory banquet afterwards, brandishing a contract to supply the league with base balls and showing a flair for the dramatic. "I'll leave this game to the young guns." The rumours of a possible arm injury to Troy's former top gun have been going `round the league ever since.
