The Ansonia Arahants returned to the fall classic and this time they come away with the prize, prevailing over the Louisville Grays, five games to three. This year was the first to play a best- of-nine format. Ginger Beaumont snared the MVP honors by setting WS records for HRs, Total Bases, and Slugging Pct., and tying the marks for RBI and Runs Scored.
The series began at Louisville's Eclipse Park, and the Arahants wasted no time in jumping out to a 4-0 first inning lead, capped by a 2 run Beaumont homer off Ned Garvin into the right field bleachers. The Greys were not so easily dismissed, however, as they belted Cy Young around for 7 hits and 7 runs in the second inning. Indicative of how this series would play out, Ansonia clawed back and won the game 9-8, on a Jimmy Barrett sac fly in the eighth. The Arahants won the next game also, in extra innings, when Hugh Duffy doubled in Barrett, making a winner of Joe Corbett, who had turned in 4 big innings of scoreless,1-hit relief.
The Grays responded in turn, sweeping the Arahants in Ansonia behind the lefty arms of Wiley Piatt, who bested 26 game winner Vic Willis, and Jerry Nops, who tossed a complete game and beat 25 game winner Cy Young, tying the series at 2 games all. When Ned Garvin pitched a sparkling 4-hit shutout at the `Hants upon returning to Kentucky, Ansonia's 2-0 lead was turned around into a 3-2 decifit. But the Eastern Division champs responded by taking game 6 behind the solid pitching of Vic Willis, and a huge 3-run dinger off the bat of series MVP Ginger Beaumont. Second sacker Jimmy Williams provided the power in game 7 with a 2-run blast off game 3 winner Piatt that brought the Arahants to the brink of their first World Championship. Game 8 was a thriller, as Ansonia took a 4-2 lead into the 8th, until Louisville pinch-hitter Joe Sullivan lined a double into the left field corner past Hugh Duffy to tie the game at 4. The Grays loaded the bases with 2 gone in the 10th, but Willie Sudhoff wriggled out of that jam by getting Sammy Strang to fly out to end the inning. The game, and the series, was finally decided in the 11th frame, as Bad Bill Dahlen, the Arahant's sparkplug shortstop. led off the inning with a line double. Jim Barrett and pinch-hitter John Warner both grounded out, with Dahlen taking third on Warner's ball. Eddie Burke, who had come in the in the 10th inning, replacing Duffy in LF, then spanked a basehit up the middle scoring Dahlen and sending the Ansonia fans into a frenzy.
