The 1891 Union League World's Championship Series |
The 1891 World's Championship Series was the first in UL history to go the full nine games, Although the `76 Fall Classic also went the distance, that series was a seven game affair. The Boston Beaneaters came back from 2-0 and 4-3 holes to claim their Championship with a 7-2 victory in front of a jubilant Beantown crowd. Newcomer Slidin' Billy Hamilton was named series MVP as he set WCS records with 17 hits, 9 runs scored and 7 RBI. Boston's backup thirdbaseman, Fred Hartman AKA 'The Legend', who etched his name in World's Championship Series annnals with several clutch basehits, also got some consideration for the award. Hartman knocked in 7 runs on his 6 hits, 3 of which went for extra bases.
The Grays from Lousiville returned to the Championship Series for the 2nd consectutive season, riding on the big bats of Wahoo Sam Crawford, big Ed Delahanty, and slugging shortstop George Davis. A contrast in styles, Boston boasted the league's best pitching for the 2nd year in a row, as Sam Leever, Jack Taylor, Rube Waddell and Clark Griffith spearheaded the deepest staff in the UL.
Waddell and Ned Garvin were the Game One starters, but Rube developed a painfull blister on his left index finger, necessitating his removal from the game before the start of the 5th inning. The Beans held a 4-1 lead at the time. Tuck Turner then greeted reliever Clark Griffith with a booming 3-bagger in the left-centerfield gap, and one out later he was plated by "The Freshest Man on Earth', Arlie Latham, and the native New Englander didn't hesitate to let Griffith know that the Grays had his number on this day. Wahoo Sam Crawford, 1890 MVP and the favorite for the `91 award, erased any doubt about the veracity of Arl's boast by slamming a big 3-run homer into the right field bleachers an inning later for a 5-4 Lousiville advantage. Ned Garvin, a 20 game winner during the regular season, held on for the complete game win despite allowing 11 Boston basehits.
Game Two was a classic extra inning affair taken by Lousiville by a 2-1 score. Southpaw Wiley Piatt stymied the Bostons all day, tossing 6 hit ball over the 10 innings the contest lasted. In the top of the 10th, George Davis singled in the catcher Ed McFarland with game winning score, then turned a neat 6-4-3 twin killing to end the game and turn back a Boston rally in the bottom of the frame. Thus the Grays marched into Boston and took two games from the Eastern Division Champs. The locals were not happy, you can be sure of that!
Rube spent the travel day soaking his finger in pickle brine, and then mounted the hill to start Game Three for the Boston Nine. Red Donahue, like Garvin a member of the 20 win circle, went for the Grays. Rube's finger still bothered him somewhat, as evidenced by the 7 free passes he issued, but Slidin' Billy lined a clutch 2-bagger for a 6-3 Boston lead in the 6th, and the Waddell and his boys held on after Big Ed Delahanty made his considerable presence felt with a two run single in the bottom of the frame to bring it to 6-5. The home team had now lost every game in the series.
In Game Four Jack Taylor, 16-14 with a 2.85 ERA during the regular season, who lost game one by virtue of walking Cupid Childs to lead off the 8th inning in relief of Clark Griffith, tossed a complete game, allowing no earned runs and just 6 singles and a Fred Tenney double as Boston cruised to a 10-3 victory. Fred "Legend" Hartman knocked in 4 big runs on 3 hits as the Bostons evened the score, sweeping the Grays at their own home park. It was now Lousiville's cranks who were unhappy with the Hometown Nine, and they were quite vocal about it.
Game Five the Grays came back with a close 7-6 win as Jack Sutthoff bested Nick Altrock in relief and the home team jinx continued.
In Game Six, Rube tossed another complete game and super sub George Nicol banged out 4 basehits as the home team finally took a game, this one by a 7-5 count. After the Grays had come back from a 4-1 hole with three runs in the 7th for the tie, bringing back thoughts of the jinx, the Beantown Nine tallied three times in the home half of the inning, on 3 errors and 2 base hits and thus put to rest that notion. Fred Hartman added to his own legend with another clutch base knock in that game-turning frame. The Series was now tied at three.
Ned Garvin got the locals back into good spirits with a sharp 5-hitter in Game Seven, showing his versatility by knocking in all three Louisville runs himself for the 3-2 win. The Grays were now one victory away from the summit, with two to play.
Game Eight was dominated by the Boston's pitching tandem of Jack Taylor and Nick Altrock, who denied the local cranks any reason to celebrate by hurling a combined 6-hitter at their heroes. The final score was 5-2 Boston, as the Beaneaters scored single runs in 5 separate innings, led by 3 hit days from Jake Stenzel and Harry Wolverton. The series would return to Boston, and ace Rube Waddell, who set the regular season record for K's this year, would be on the hill for the Bostons. Wiley Piatt, so effective in Game Two, would go for the Grays. The stage was set.
Rube made some noise with his bat in the 2nd, plating second sacker Bid McPhee with a 2-out single, although SS Bones Ely was cut down attempting to advance to 3rd on the play, ending the inning. That score held until the 7th, when the Grays catcher, Ossie Schreckengost led off with a walk. Piatt layed down a beauty of a bunt, and everybody was safe when Boston went for the lead runner. That brought up the top of Louisville's formidable lineup. Cupid Childs layed down a bunt a well, moving the runners up to second and third. Now it was Davis, Delahanty, and Shad Barry, who had come in for Sam Crawford earlier in the game when he was beaned by Waddell. Davis responded with a line drive single to plate both runners and give Louisville a 2-1 lead. After Boston manager Dirk Knemeyer intentionally passed Big Ed Delahanty, Barry laid down yet another Louisville bunt. Knemeyer then had Waddell walk the dangerous Tuck Turner to pitch to Paul Hines, who responded with a harmless groundball. But the damage was done. 2-1, Grays.
In the Boston half of inning seven, Bones Ely led off with a sharp single to left. Waddell then sacrificed him to second before Sliding Billy Hamilton moved him along with a base hit of his own. First and third, the UL's Stolen Base Leader at first. After a few throws over, Billy was off, and sliding safely into second with the SB on a delayed steal. That brought up the Boston backstop, "The Duke of Tralee", Roger Bresnahan, who was aquirred at the trading dealine from the Haymakers of Troy. The Duke hit a sharp grounder to normally reliable second baseman Cupid Childs, who played it off the heel of his glove for the E-4, and a tie ball game. The Duke then proceeded to swipe second on another delayed steal, this one uncontested by the Louisville catcher. The Grays ersatz manager John Mortimer then brought in right hander Jack Sutthoff, effectively taking the bat out of the deadly hands of George Nicol, who batted .500 with 8 hits during the series. Boston field general Knemeyer responded by sending Elmer Smith, the team's regular left fielder, to the dish in his stead. Elmer took ball four wide which loaded the bags for slugger Roger Connor, who had struggled all series, after missing the first game to a regular season injury, as well as going down in Game Five to the injury bug as well. Louisville brought in the lefty, Jerry Nops to face the big slugger. The native Connecticutter finally came through, slicing a single to left that squibbed through Tuck Turner's legs, enabling Connor to make third and clearing the bags. 5-2 Boston. Jake 'The Snake' Stenzel capped the inning's scoring with a booming double to center before McPhee and Hartman made outs to end the inning.
The final run was accounted for by an Elmer Smith sac fly in the 8th. 7-2 Boston. Louisville had been to the brink of victory, leading in the seventh inning of the final game, but were turned away by the clutch hitting of the Boston Nine. The World's Championship remains in East, where it has resided for three of the four seasons the Union League has existed. The Grays thus become the only team to lost the WCS twice, and the Beaneaters become the fourth different team to take home the prize in as many seasons.
