History: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 15th, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by 16 women.  The founders envisioned an organization that would provide social and economic betterment at the city, state, national, and international level.  Alpha Kappa Alpha's purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, and to promote unity and sisterhood among collegiate women.  AKA's have chapters in the U.S., West Africa, Germany, the Bahamas, and the Virgin Islands.  Programs include "Children's Story Hour" at public libraries, "Black Dollar Day", and career planning seminars.  Famous ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha include: Gladys Knight - entertainer, Rosa Parks - civil rights activist, Maya Angelou - poet & author, Dr. Mae Jamison - 1st Black Woman astronaut, Coretta Scott King - civil rights activist, Phylicia Rashaad - actress, Jada Pinkett - actress, Sharon Pratt-Kelly - former mayor of Washington, D.C.

National founding date: 1906

History: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, on December 4th, 1906 by 7 men.  The fraternity strives to embody in its members the principles of good character, sound scholarship, fellowship and the uplifting of humanity.  Alpha Phi Alpha's purpose is to foster close association and unified support among Black students.  Alphas have chapters located throughout the world.  Programs include "Go to High School, Go to College", voter registration drives, and holiday Adopt-A-Family programs.  Famous Alpha men include: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Dr. W.E.B. DuBois - philosopher, Duke Ellington - jazz musician, Thurgood Marshall - former U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Tony Brown - journalist, Jesse Owens - Olympian.

DELTA SIGMA THETA

National founding date: 1913

 

History:  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13th, 1913 by 22 women at Howard Univeristy in Washington, D.C.  Their purpose is to utilize the collective strength of college women to promote academic excellence, community service and cultural enrichment.  The founders envisioned an organization that would permit them to use their collective strength to promote a high level of scholarship and provide assistance to those less fortunate.  There are chapters in the United States, Germany, Haiti, Liberia, the Far East and West Africa.  Programs include Community Life center and mentor/tutorial programs.  Famous Delta women include: Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune - founder of the National Council of Negro Women, Shirley Chisholm - first Black woman elected to the House of Representatives, Carol Moseley-Braun - congresswoman, Lena Horne - entertainer, Johnetta B. Cole - president of Spelman College, Dr. Betty Shabazz - educator, Ruby Dee - poet & actress, Nikki Giovanni - poet.

ZETA PHI BETA

National founding date: 1920

History:  Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16th, 1920 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by 5 women.  That year, Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma held a joint convention and became the first constitutionally bound black greek letter sister and brother affiliates.  Zeta Phi Beta's purpose is to foster ideals of service, charity, scholarship, civic and cultural endeavors, sisterhood, and finer womanhood.  They were the first black greek letter sorority to establish chapters in Africa and the Bahamas.  Programs include National Education Foundations, "Stork's Nest", and the Minority National Bone Marrow Registry Drive.  Famous Zeta women include: Clara Mclaughlin - 1st Black female TV Station owner, Jane Kennedy - actress & model, Dionne Warwick - entertainer, Esther Rolle - actress, Algenita Scott Davis - President of the National Bar Association, Zora Neale Hurston - author & poet, Anita Baker - songstress.

History:  Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 9th, 1914 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by 3 men.  From its inception, the founders conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community.  The founders held deep convictions that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come.  Phi Beta Sigma's purpose is to promote brotherhood and community service and to pursue scholastic excellence. Sigmas have chapters in the U.S., Europe, Africa, Japan, Korea and the Caribbean.  Programs include "Bigger and Better Business", "Social Action", "Education", and holiday food drives.  Famous Sigma men include: Dr. James Weldon Johnson - composer of the Black National Anthem, A. Phillip Randolph - activist, Jerry Rice - NFL, Blair Underwood - Actor, Emmitt Smith - NFL, George Washington Carver - inventor.
